I don't think there's a right or wrong in a situation like this. If a family is ill-equipped to look after an elderly loved one who's suffering dementia or similar, then really, they do that loved one a grave disservice in trying to keep looking after them. I'd imagine you always visit her - presuming she's close enough to you - and that is all you can do. At least you tried, and were big enough to admit that it was too much for you. She's way better off where she is, truth be told. Thanks for sharing xoxoxoxox

God bless you! Sometimes there is no other choice to do but what is available. I understand how hard it is with somebody with dementia, Alzheimer's disease. They are so frightened because they forget where they are and sometimes even who they are! You know you didn't do anything to hurt her. You only wanted to keep her safe. Many people feel guilty having to put someone in a nursing home. We had to put our son in a nursing home because he had a fatal illness that made him not think right and we were also afraid that we couldn't keep him safe. I worked my entire nursing career in nursing homes. I can sympathize with you. Just please know you are not alone. I wrote this poem about a lady who was a resident where I worked. If you should ever want someone to talk to, I'm only a few keyboard keys away. God bless you!!

Where's MY Mama?
By Patty Palmer
She wanders down the corridor
Peeking in every room.
She's looking for her mama
Who said she'd be back soon.

She asks a lady dressed in white
Where could her mama be?
She's getting kind of worried
Cause her mama has her key.

She rushes to her bedroom
But finds nobody there.
She's searching for her mama
Doesn't anybody care?

She looks in the mirror
Hair of gray and wrinkled brow.
She wonders if this person
Knows where mama is right now.

She tries to ask the question
But this lady will not speak.
She doesn't have the answer
To the question that she seeks.

It's getting on toward night time
And her mama still is lost.
She offers money to find her.
She'll pay whatever the cost.

These people all dressed in white
Tell her that mama's gone.
She won't be coming home again.
Not tonight nor in the dawn.

She remembers now that mama left
The day God took her home
To live with Him in His mansion.
Now she feels so all alone.

She calms down realizing
That mama now is safe and sound.
She's gone up to Heaven
Where a better life can be found.

She gives in to slumber.
Her mind and body now at rest.
She's free of fear and worry
And for the moment of restlessness.

But as the morning sun rises
She wanders peeking in every room.
She's looking for her mama
Who said she'd be home soon.
God bless you!!

Hello Mary,
I pray that you are ok. It's never easy making a decision of sending a love one to a nursing home. But, life sometimes, gives us no choice. I feel your love and pain in making that decision. Give yourself a break, I am pretty sure that decision wasn't easy. But, life is not always easy. Great poem and an enjoyable read. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure many, as myself, can relate to your message. Well done.

this is one of the most difficult decision we have to make in our span of lifetime. regardless of the decision you made you show your uttermost love and there's not another decision that is stronger in this world. your poem was a gift and it was written with a gift. thanks for the read. "your so vein" means mood or humor.

Your poem is full of love and pain. Having gone through a similar situation, it was like I was back there again. It is hard to make peace with such an incredibly grueling situation that has no satisfying ending no matter what you choose to do.

This is well-written. The refrain: "I wonder if we were right in sending you away." works very well in the poem because it reflects the relentless thoughts that nag at you.
All I can tell you is that it says to me you are good people. For if you were not good people, this impossible decision would not haunt you so much. May God Bless.

I remember when my brother admitted my mother to a nursing home, she had stayed with us in times when she needed help, but she was completely self aware, so mentally, she was fine, but she kept falling over, and it was hard to get her on her feet, we were afraid if we weren't there, that she'd be in the hot sun.?! but she was fiercely independent, she clung to me the day we took her there, it was a nice place, with caring staff, but she had a stroke shortly after, and died, I always regret putting her in there, she was 89. You awoke those memories, don't fret Mary, put it on the one who cares. Well done, blessings Roy

A very well-written heartfelt poem about regret and the thought that you may have done the wrong thing at the time. We cannot know ahead what is going to happen and we act according to our circumstances at the time. There us nothing that can change to the decision that was made.

Mary,

What a sad situation. I worry to death sometimes about what will happen when my mother gets past the point of taking care of herself. We've offered her a place here, of course- but we have to face the fact that things like this also happen - and tear a family apart.

The repetition demonstrates how much this indecision has plagued you since then.

One note - just one place where you need an edit:
--> I wonder if (we) were right in sending you away.

Thanks so much!

Thank you for your review (and help again) It is truly appreciated.
At the time there was no support system or nursing facilities that were more humane or comfortable. If it were not for Nana's niece we would not have found this place and it was 50 miles away.
