This is a spellbinding piece of writing. I felt like I was right there watching it all go down. This is a great show of a man seeing the need to change with the times.

Comment from Roxanna Andrews
And I thought Roxanna Andrews took up a lot of space when I had to write it across the top of my school papers. I never remember how to spell, von Cooednutfinkovakoolname. =] This is very clever and a lot of fun to read. Well done, I don't see any error except for the description, 'layiing' it straight. Unless it's on purpose.

Always great to read a parody of a hard-boiled detective story, complete with a dame. You can tell Steve isn't up on his spying game or he not only would've had all the gadgeted accoutrements, he would've nabbed Jasper for blackmail and doubled-down on his fee.
Just a couple of typos:
layiing (laying) it straight - in the subtitle
the smell of craft beer, wine and organic cider tickled his tastebuds. (taste buds) - two words
"Yep. Now if you'll excuse he, (me) I've had my eye on a nice little schoolteacher from Manhattan
Great to see you back and posting, G and thanks for sharing.

I had a lot of fun with this one. I've been busy in work over the lockdown period and home-schooling so not much free time. Much appreciated as always. And many thanks for the catches.

That was fun to read, Gareth. Very relatable to old farts like me. I was kicking and fighting all the way from the landline phones to the flip-tops and now that I've got my smartphone, the landlines are looking mighty good to me. Not a thing I would change, which is rare for me. I usually find something to nitpick about. Anyway, it's good to be back. Better to see so many who haven't left. I look forward to reading more of your stuff.

Good to see you back

I am glad that in your absence you haven't lost your talent. You remain one of the best authors on this site. If I compare this to another P.I. story posted you are hands-down a lot better and have a great character. Thank you for sharing.

Yeah, I haven't been writing much lately. Way too busy with work, home-schooling and so on. I had a bit of fun with this one. G

I enjoyed your story. I had a few chuckles here and there. I guess I can somewhat relate to your character. The kids will mention something, I'll say what the heck is that? They think I grew up with the dinosaurs. Sometimes I feel that old, lol. Your story is well-written, very interesting of course. Your characters are vivid, really come to life.

Gareth,
Hey, friend! Where you been?
This was a fun way to reappear. You made me laugh out loud a couple of times - often with a name, actually. That's how easy I am. haha
Notes:
1.) "Yep. Now if you'll excuse (me),?
2.) I've had my eye on a nice little school/teacher from Manhattan
3.) your description should be :(p)laying it straight(?)
--> needs some editing, please
4.) Cooednutfinkovakoolnames
--> what a silly name. If only you could think of a cool name instead!
hahahahahaha!
Thanks a bunch - I enjoyed!

It took me literally seconds to come up with that name. It's a bit of a jibe at some of my other writer friends about how they agonise over the right name for their character. When they say 'what's the best name for a whatever?' I usually reply that that is not how parents name their children! lol
The laying it straight line is also intentional. That's poking fun at a writer I know who insists on writing things like this for real and totally ignoring the anachronisms it provokes.
I'm hoping I'll have more time to write again. This year's been so busy.

Just loved this character G, it's so true, I think in our mind's eye we'll still see Humphrey Bogart as Sam Slade chasing after the ".Maltese Falcon" and Sydney Greenstreet, and Peter Lorre. I think the modern PI would spend most of his time in the office. Well done G, brilliant anecdote. Blessings Roy

Times change so fast that it's almost impossible for any of us to keep up if you have any responsibilities, and also, many times we like things as they are and don't want them to change. Thanks for sharing.

And Gareth, I think you manage to do just that. Writing a piece of parody. You are taking the mickey out of everybody and the whole genre. I loved it, and it's very well written. Ulla:)))
