Winter is one of my favorite seasons. I used to hate, until I realized the reason for the season, barring religion of course. Now when I think of how bad off I am, I remember New York.

I love the picture, Brooke. I have a bluejay that visits my back yard sometimes. Winter isn't my favorite time of year, but you have done a lovely job with this Shakespearean sonnet, and thanks for sharing about the rhyming. It helps to know these things. :>D Miss Sally

Loved it!! Loved the image and the background & font color combo too - complimented this piece very nicely. The rhythm was on point as usual too. Also, I really loved these two lines (I'm from Iowa & am experiencing it all very much so right now!):
"Although a tyrant ruling by decree,
it also brings the beauty of each flake."

Hi Brooke,
As winter's first icy blasts give us the chills, your poem reminds me it's time to fill the bird feeder and cover the garden bench ...
Nicely done, another worthy of the six.

That blue jay is very beautiful, he is lucky, the snow and winter don't bother him. Winter does look nice, but beyond that I am not fond of it. Excellent rhyming and imagery to convey your thoughts on the merits of winter. Good luck in the contest. Faye

And yet, in spite of chilling cruelty,
it leaves a world of splendor in its wake.
Although a tyrant ruling by decree,
it also brings the beauty of each flake.
This stanza in opinion is the strength of the poem. Well done. Best wishes in the contest. Shalom

There is nothing more beautiful than fresh, new fallen snow. But I cannot tolerate the cold...why I moved to Mexico. Beautiful Sonnet and a strong entry for this contest. As you know, I get all befuddled by the rules so I trust you to know what you are talking about. Beautiful photo, I feel the chill this lovely bird is experiencing...sends shivers up my spine.

A beautiful Sonnet, Brooke. It's nice to see a variation on the standard abab cdcd efef gg for Shakespearian Sonnets. Always something new to learn - especially from you.
The format of comment, expansion, and turn are beautifully done. I loved the mood you create in this poetic.
Rose.

Brooke - a perfect Shakespearean sonnet in both iambic pentameter and rhyme scheme abab. Good turn in stanza 3 and a very nice final couplet. Had you not already told me previously about 'toward' being pronounced 'tward' by Americans I'd have pounced in on that LOL. The content is really fine with good enjambment throughout. Good Luck in the contest. Warm regards Dorothy x
