Syllable Question

<< Thread Modifed February 2 at 12:54PM >>

I had never written any poetry before I came to fanstory last month. Because many of the contests are for very short forms, I thought, maybe I could give this a try. And I have been having fun playing around with it!

Many of these contests require counting syllables, and I am confused as to how to do that with certain words.

These are examples from what I saw today, so some of you might recognize them from your own poems. I am not being critical of it, I am just trying to understand it.

Words I saw that I am assuming are being counted as one syllable based on the total count:
Fire and Rhythm
The dictionary shows the pronunciations as: fahyuhr and rith-uhm. Both are definitely spoken with two syllables.

And then the opposite. A word counted with three syllables (based on total syllable count) but only two are spoken:
Entwined

Since poetry often seems dependent on cadence, I would think the spoken syllable count is important.
Please educate me. :-)

RE: Syllable Question

Message edited:

Great question! I found as many sites saying "fire" was two, as one syllable.

Rhythm seemed almost universally to be evaluated as two.

Entwined had a vast majority of two syllable counts.

I use www.howmanysyllables.com or wordhelp.com as a source.

The pronunciation of many words changes with country, or even dialect.

If I enter a "syllable count" contest I add my source for any "questionable" words and indicate with something like:

"How many syllables in jewelry?

3 syllables

Divide jewelry into syllables jew-el-ry

Stressed syllable in jewelry jew-el-ry

How to pronounce jewelry:  juulree"

----

(The above is from wordhelp.com)

As you can see a writer could make an argument for two or three syllables!

(Identifying your "count" intent in your author's notes may not satisfy everyone, but it informs the reader you were aware, researched, and chose one or the other)

Hope this helps!

RE: Syllable Question
You are welcome... and I apologize for the gremlin that took over my very
W-I-D-E- spacing in my reply!
