Question re: publication
I'm looking to expand my writing. I'd like to see if there is a chance of making a little money from writing.
I know that anything posted here remains my property and can be posted/published elsewhere, but I've seen publication sites that have restrictions of what they will accept.
"This precludes works published on a personal blog or other website."
Are works posted on FanStory considered to be published on this site?

RE: Question re: publication
Technically, no, but you never know what a publisher considers "published." To be safe, you could use a
working title, then publish your work with a different title. You can also block search engines from finding you on Fanstory. It's also a good idea to use a pseudonym. The object is to keep a publisher from checking you out by search engine.

Wow! Great advise.
Thanks.

RE: Question re: publication
I don't know about prose, but for poetry, something posted on FanStory would indeed be considered "previously published" by the vast majority of journals.
If it has been substantially revised, that might be different.
RE: Question re: publication
Thanks Ben. That's what I was wondering.
Would it make a difference if a work was posted for critique vs for a contest?
If it's posted for critique, it wouldn't really be considered "published" whereas something posted to a contest might?

RE: Question re: publication
I honestly don't think a submissions editor (which for smaller journals is usually the same person as the general editor) would make any distinction. To them the salient fact is that the poem in question is now online.
RE: Question re: publication
If your profile is set to private and not open to the public (ie search engines), many publishers will accept this as it's a private group and not publicly published / posted. It's as if you demonstrated it at a writer's group.
Most publishers won't go looking for it either. If it's under a different name or title it's pretty much untraceable but making your profile / portfolio member only is the safest bet.

Great advice giraffmang. Thanks!
