AI and Copyright

I was a bit surprised to learn that some members are running other member's work through AI Copilot for analysis/review. To me this seems questionable and might also be a copyright infringement. I think we can run our own writes wherever we want, but running other member's work should be restricted.

I am curious to know what other people think about this or if there is more information about how copyright works with AI.

RE: AI and Copyright

Interesting question.

I asked AI:

"Scanning a copyrighted poem using AI tools for analysis or review is not inherently copyright infringement. It falls under fair use for educational or critical purposes.
However, the key lies in disclosure and attribution. Properly attributing the original author is essential.
Case-by-Case Basis:
The Copyright Office considers AI-assisted works on a case-by-case basis. If the AI-generated output is substantially modified or creatively arranged by a human, it may be eligible for copyright protection."

That's par for the AI course!

Thoughts?

RE: AI and Copyright
To me, it's pretty simple. Stay in your own lane. Don't damage other people.

RE: AI and Copyright
I agree.

If it is "Artificial" it has no place here.

Not in reviews... and not in posts!

RE: AI and Copyright
FanStory considers it plagiarism. That is a break in the site terms. It is not permitted anywhere on FanStory.

RE: AI and Copyright
Sigh. AI Is everywhere. I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and I have a few favorite narrators. Now many audiobooks are read by a "virtual person." It's not the same thing, and I fear it's the way of the world.

RE: AI and Copyright
I believe, in our writing world, this act is completely out of order. We are here to write just as we did before AI, which includes respecting the works of any other writer as well as the rules of plagiarism.

Don't we all want our stories, poems, lyrics, books, etc. to be sincere and come from within?

AI can be extremely useful in many situations. I recently used ChatGPT -- I had sent three different letters attempting to get a reimbursement from an online company that bamboozled me and got away with my money. After no success, I had the last letter rewritten by ChatGPT, and my money was returned within an hour.

My two cents.

AI works by cannibalizing other people's writing. It is, at its core, plagiarism.

Am I fighting an uphill battle against it? Yes. Does it have its time and place? Sure. Have it help write those tedious emails. But I don't think it should be anywhere near our creative writing. There are already AI generated "novels" flooding into Amazon, reaped from the writing of people who have actually put the time and effort into developing their craft and specific voice.

To be frank, hearing that people on this site are feeding it works makes me want to remove all of my writing entirely.

RE: AI and Copyright
Tom has announced within this thread that AI is unacceptable anywhere on FanStory.

If you see it, in reviews, replies, or posts it's imperative you let him know so he can enforce his stance.

RE: AI and Copyright
I've not used AI to write, for me that defeats "my" objective of seeing (and using) writing as a mental exercise, but I recently put an entire short story into ChatGPT and requested a criticism, with suggestions on how I might improve weaknesses.

I received a 1,000 word critique in less than a moment, complete with constructive criticism and several valid (or at least worthy of consideration) suggestions.

I found it helpful.

I do not quite see why it cannot be a tool, just like a dictionary or a thesaurus or "Grammarly" or a syllable-counter are tools.

As for copyright, well as has been said: anything that is not autobiography is plagiarism.
Or as Mark Twain would have it "...ninety-nine parts of all things that proceed from the intellect are plagiarisms, pure and simple; and the lesson ought to make us modest. But nothing can do that..."

So, AI as the writer: bad
AI as the reader: not so bad.

RE: AI and Copyright
I believe the issue was not any of us putting our own work through AI and partaking of the analysis to improve our work.

To my understanding the concern was/is any of us cutting and pasting other writers' posts and "scanning" them and then cutting and pasting the AI analysis onto the site.

The additional point was the danger (As Gloria demonstrated)-- of asking AI to write a sonnet (or choose your form or genre)--which AI will "produce" in thirty seconds or less--and then posting it as one's own work here.

Both have happened here already.

Both negate the purpose of a Writer's Site.

Your thoughts?
