A childhood memory

Through the Window

by Tina Crute

Unable to sleep, at midnight I sat
at the window with my own moon,
loving the night air and petting my cat,
but morning would come all too soon.

Then from the darkness came frightening sounds,
much yelling and screaming and worse.
 Mom and Dad voices so loud, my ear found;
each spoken word carried a curse.

Oh no! Their kids that were sleeping inside,
I knew they would probably hear
Mommy and Daddy's loud voices outside,
and wake up in bedrooms of fear.

The couples' curses continued to rise,
 and then a 'SLAP' like no other!
My heart hurt so bad it watered my eyes.
Who got hit? Was it the mother?

The slapping sound was not meant for kids' dreams,
nor words that were coming from pain.
"Get your hands off me!" I heard someone scream,
not wanting to be so restrained.

Suddenly silence rained down in the night;
not a single sound could be heard.
I guessed that noone was hurt in the fight,
for the air held not one more word.

I then talked to God for a long, long while.
to help with what those kids were dealt,
to carry each child to a future smile.
I was them; I knew how they felt.

As a kid I slept by an open window. I would hear fights in the dark many houses away, but the sound carried. Sometimes, I heard couples violently fighting. It would give me stomachaches. Children shouldn't grow up hearing that. My life now is happy! I just feel for kids that have to grow up hearing and seeing violence.

*Falling Up The Stairs, by our friend, Mastery, is a story inspired by actual childhood memories. It is his story. It is inspiring and one of my favorite books.
