An amazing Aussie war-time hero

Teddy Sheean

by bob cullen

Teddy Sheean was just a lad not yet nineteen years of age.
When he entered History Books on the Bravest Soldier's page.
December first, nineteen forty-two off the Australian coast,
This brave young farmer lad strapped himself to his machine gun post.

Attack it came from the sky his ship's fate resolved in a blink.
Teddy helped free a lifeboat there wasn't any time to think.
The odds were stacked against them Ted counted thirteen planes above.
The youngest sailor on the ship Teddy was a man in love.

Surrender wasn't a word in young Ted's vocabulary.
He watched pilots turn their attack on his crew mates in the sea.
Wild with rage and his ship now sinking he sensed his death was near.
He said a prayer and turned to God then he overcame all fear.

As Teddy slid beneath the waves where the bravest sailors go
He died with a hundred shipmates but forty-nine would know.
The youngest sailor on the ship Teddy ran to man the gun.
He was the reason survivors knew they'd see a morning sun.

Ted Sheean was an eighteen year old sailor on board HMAS Armidale. Attacked by thirteen Japanese aircraft,
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
