Cousins in War

by poetwatch

While I was out drinking one day,
I saw my cousin standing tall
In his mine-riddled green uniform,
Missing parts of his body and all.

Now, I knew my cousin was dead,
But another stood tall by his grave.
I took a drink and gave them a salute
I see one smile, he hadn’t shaved.

The one in the grave didn’t smile
He just held out his hand.
Yet, I smiled and gave him a drink.
He took that drink, liquor falling on land.

My other cousin then took a swig,
"For old time sakes," he said.
I see through clouded eyes,
These memories, for he is also dead.

In Their Memory writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a poem, any type, about the members of the military present and past.

We were young boys serving our country, high on life, living for the minute.
Everything changed we became men. Some of us came back some didnâ??t.
I lost one cousin in the jungle the other because of Agent Orange. I am proud to salute all men and women that served and serve our country
