Dazzled

In his absent presence
eyes shine like an ancient mineral
quartz, I think,
but fractured.

Under his world's weight
he sits gleaming,
rigidly startled at life.

Fresh crystals blink dazzled
after a long darkness.
Ornaments on a Christmas tree.

After a long, dark and difficult first half year, something seemed to come back around Christmas time. Sometimes he could look at me, and I thought he understood. Frightened, but with a certain clearness in the eyes, that gave me courage.
