The Departure

by Diana L Crawford

Here we stand,
in the cool misty rain,
waiting for the
midnight steam engine.

Puddles form on the
cold cement surface
of the train station,
created from rain that
does not cease.

The bellow of
a distant whistle
grows louder,
announcing the train's
impending arrival.

As the wheels
screech to a halt,
our hearts sink
into a mutual
song of sadness.

I will hold the memory
of this precious moment
close to my heart
as I travel into the night.
