Loving A Soldier

by jaybird1

When the mail comes you bubble with joy,
Act like a babe with a shiny new toy.
Although you know he's an ocean away,
You just keep loving him ,more eve'ry day.

You're proud of the job he's helping get done
and though you do care, missed loving's no fun.
Then you grit your teeth and start over again,
you have a job and you better begin.

You will work and you'll sweat all hours of the day.
Your job will be hard, if you are earning your pay.
You're tired and weary just by doing your share
and helping your soldier boy win, over there.

Loving a soldier brings bitterness, tears,
loneliness, sadness, uncountable fears;
Not much to get from a lot of giving,
just fretting, sweating and barely living.

Loving a soldier is not really fun,
but well worth the price when the battle is won.

I was in the Air Force during W War 2. I wrote and sent
this to my girlfriend, who was working at a war production plant. She would later become my wife,
after the end of the war. We were married in 1947, after
I enrolled in college on the G I bill
