Arizona Mountains

by Willie P. Smith

The Arizona mountains, have you been there?
Have you smelled the pines and pure mountain air?

Have you ridden horseback through the Sedona trails,
Or gathered around a campfire and listened to the tales?

Have you pictured the shootouts on Prescott's Whiskey Row,
Or seen all the beauty around Show Low?

Have you ridden across the Verde, when the water was high,
And marveled at the beauty of an eagle gliding by?

Have you been to the rim and felt the breeze,
Or heard the whispers as it blows through the trees?

Have you seen the petroglyphs scratched in stone,
And been through the ruins the Anasazi called home?

Have you closed your eyes and listened to the past?
Have you wondered how long this beauty will last?

When on the Mogollon, did you reach for a cloud?
Did you hear your echo after shouting out loud?

There's much more not written here,
Like the antelope, the elk and beautiful mule deer.

The Arizona mountains with the pure, fresh air.
You were close to Heaven if you've been there.

The Mogollon rim is in the Arizona mountains, where it's supposed to be home to the
Mogollon Big Foot, If you believe in that sort of thing.

The Anasazi is an ancient Indian tribe that lived in Arizona and some other states. Anasazi means "ancient ones."

Petroglyphs are pictures carved or scratched in stone by Indians. There are many of them in Arizona, but they are slowly being destroyed by hikers and such.
