A poem for ScoMo

by CD Richards

You valued your immortal soul,
until you sold it off for coal
to pacify your mining magnate mates.
What kind of backbone have you got?
The country's waiting on you, Scott.
What course of action will you advocate?

One day, the country cried "Enough!"
as you were acting bold and tough,
and so, we got a taste of things to come.
The land caught fire, a billion lost,
you and your friends ignored the cost
of viewing life as economic sums.

For you maligned the folk who know
the fatal flaw in "Take it slow" --
the experts on the global warming threat.
Procrastination is your game,
but there's no way more of the same
will see our country's obligations met.

The ranks of those who buy your spin
are growing noticeably thin,
and few accept attempts to shift the blame.
For those who care about the world
will not be soiled by mud you've hurled--
they've earned the right to critical acclaim.

I thought devout folk deemed it hip
to ponder on their stewardship
o'er life and this old world on which it's found.
So why not ditch the greed and pride?
It's not too late to stand beside
all those who treat the Earth as hallowed ground.

It may come as a shock to you,
but I'm convinced this much is true:
it matters not a bit what creed you hold.
If you don't make a quick U-turn
then more of this parched land will burn,
and those with toddlers won't see them grow old.
