Why was it decided to have a month of January?

January, Month of Transition

by Reese Turner

May I have your attention, please;
A kind word for January, I propose,
A short tribute I have whilst we sneeze
Due to bitter, cold wind and snows…

And, I note, sadly, we must tuck away
All the Christmas charm and glitter
In January, on some depressing day,
How to pack and store; such dither!

Cabin fever? January’s home, to me
We’re trapped inside, oh, how boring,
With silly games or old movies on TV,
Or listening to others’ whines or snoring…

But, wait, did I have nice things to say now
About the worst month of the whole year?
Hmmm, what was it? Look, here comes a plow…
If I can just remember… Please be patient, dear.

Oh yes, January is the month of transition;
When football and holidays fade from view,
Our first dreams of Spring; that’s my position;
Baseball, gardens, golf - outside things to do.

“Hope Springs Eternal”, a duel entendre therein,
Starting January, even as cold blizzards blow,
Fantasies of early robins, wondering when,
That’s January, the “transition month” I know….
