My Bird Feeder

Oh, the bountiful joy that is brought to my soul
every day, as birds flock at my feeder.

The special sighting of Passeriformes, my favorite
the Emberizidae-Cardinalinae,
Known far and wide as the Northern Cardinal.
The proud male, chirping away as he stands out
from all the rest with ruby red feathers
and a glowing orange beak.
I sit patiently watching and certain to see
his mate, the smaller of the two, with golden hues
and taupe feathers with a muted orange beak.

As the sun crosses the yardarm the species most
active out my window are the Fringillidae; Finches.
The common house finch, the purple finch. the goldfinch
all tweeting and twittering, each taking a turn to nibble on
seeds and splash in a pool of water, as if dancing a dance.

Then if my luck holds strong, at the setting in of dusk,
I may be fortuitous to see the evening grosbeak feasting
at the perch, he with his vibrant yellows and white
with tucks of black feathers and she with a mottled white underbelly
and caped-like black over white wings and most golden yellow beak.
What a God-given sight to see! These living, breathing creatures,
as they co-exist in my midst.
