A Dinner-time Drama

by LisaMay

Daddy told us about the cat.
He said, “Oh, drat, Kitty shat on the mat.
I'll skin it for my hat.”

Mummy said, “You’re cruel and rude!
You’ve put us off our food.
You really should not swear,
when the kids are sitting right there.
I’ll wash your mouth with soap;
that’ll teach you a lesson, I hope.”

But Daddy laughed and said,
“Woman, you’re off your head!
You’ll make me blow some bubbles –
that’s all you will get for your troubles.”

Meanwhile, the cat had run away
to live and play another day.
And we children sat and giggled,
we fidgeted and wriggled,
because we knew that Daddy was joking,
teasing Mummy, just provoking.
Then Mummy dished up the dinner –
now everyone’s a winner.

Later… the cat came home and sat
watching Daddy wash the mat.
Then he patted the cat and said,
"I would never want you dead."
