A passion for competition.

The Olympian Peak

by LisaMay

As spectator or athlete,
the challenge of the sport
to win with brain or brawn,
makes my heart beat...

Fast, faster, fastest.
High, higher, highest.
Strong, stronger, strongest.

Competitors strive and endure.
We can’t all be Olympians
at the peak of physical powers,
but even our small successes
can give us a peek at that peak.

The contest raises excitement –
achievement has a thrill.
When we conquer our fears
and wear down adversaries,
the victory celebration is sweet!

Mediocrity’s level playing field
holds no challenge.
Where’s the satisfaction?
Where’s the sporting chance
for personal pride and glory?

Teamwork teaches
commitment to cooperation.
Character is built on competition.
Life lessons to be learned –
Be a team player:
you’ll have friends on your side.
Play the game fairly.
Respect is earned.
Trust and be trusted.
Honour holds firm.

We’re at the top of our game,
developing and improving,
when body and mind combine,
trained in disciplined skill,
then focused on the prize.

The flip side teaches fortitude.
In such an arena, we learn that to win
we must also face losing.

Writing Prompt
Write a free verse poem on competition. Tell what it means to be competitive and why you love competition or not. Free verse is a form of poetry that does not necessarily follow to any specific meter patterns, rhyme, or any other pattern. Free verse, despite its freedom, often still has some elements of form. Most free verse does observe a convention of lines and structure. No rhyming patterns.

Author's Note:
The Olympic motto is Citius, Altius, Fortius, which is Latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger". It was proposed by Pierre de Coubertin upon the creation of the International Olympic Committee in 1894.
