Tabloid Trouble

The author has placed a warning on this post for language.

Do I have to create a mystery veneer?
You think you know me – I can see you sneer.
What should I show, and what should I hide;
how have I turned into one you deride?
Is it my politics, my morals, or fame?
To me it’s real life, but to you it’s a game.

I appear in the media as a filler ‘fact’ –
my life is picked over, and I cannot react
without naming and shaming
and a camera in my face.
I want to flee, to leave without trace.
But why should I run when it is your fault
for exposing my life so I want to bolt?

You lap up the gossip; your insatiable thirst
wants more and more – my life is now cursed.
It might not have happened, but what the hell,
let’s make it up, because your shit don’t smell.

Author's Note:

So-called 'celebrities' are often attention-seeking and encourage an entourage of paparazzi, but for the ones who want a quiet life out of public gaze it must be a nightmare. They may well operate their professional lives in a public forum, but everyone should be able to enjoy some privacy in their personal lives.

Gossipy trash-mags make money from voyeur's obsessions, often with people who are famous for being famous. The line between reality and fantasy is so blurred these days, with the Internet making it too easy for people to fraudulently represent all sorts of un-truths and rip-offs, as well as bullying and stalking.
