That magic moment of falling in love.

Could You Be Mine?

by LisaMay

When happiness happened
I looked over my shoulder,
crossed my fingers,
dodged left, then right, in a quickstep,
expecting a thunderbolt
to knock me dead.

I held my breath and counted to 100
so hardship could go hide itself.
I turned around 3 times
and didn’t go looking for it.

Shutting my eyes quickly
so I didn’t see a black cat,
I knocked on wood,
tossed salt over my shoulder,
and snapped a wishbone.

I made sure I didn’t walk under a ladder,
or have anything to do with number 13,
or step on any cracks.

Only then did I
throw caution to the wind,
and let out my breath
in a surprised and grateful sigh.

Yes, I am still alive.
My hammering heart tells me so.
Am I actually allowed this moment?

Happiness happened, and you are here.
Your hand fits mine.
Your foolish grin matches mine.
Could you be mine?
The stars match the sparkle in our eyes.
We’ll mine diamonds to match the stars.

If only this were autobiographical!
I wouldn't mind owning a productive diamond mine (so I could hand it over to the workers).
Oh, and a love interest would be nice, too.
