If only life could be lived backwards

Hindsight

by Gypsymooncat

Tales of old are often shared with younger generations
sitting by the fire with Granddad puffing on his pipe
those stories come from questions or from simple conversations
and youngsters listen riveted, their eagerness so ripe

If they could stay that age or, maybe, keep their childlike yen
the stories they are told would never lose validity
but girls grow into women and young boys grow into men
and life becomes a circle of responsibility

A higher education gives them leave for empty chatter
as they go up a level in the social pecking order
their posh degrees appear to be the only things that matter
(not to mention Prada, Saint Laurent or Estee Lauder)

Those family ties are coming loose and have begun to fray
their visits are too short, it seems; once they arrive, they go
and Granddad's left beside the fire wishing they would stay
or, at least, to sit a while, as they did years ago

He knows that may not happen, not until they've seen the light
like his sons, now fathers, who have learned from their mistakes
for elders see from vantage points of wisdom and hindsight
unlike the young whose lessons come from errors still to make
