Please Go Away

by Diana L Crawford

The first time that you held me near,
I told you of my deepest fear;
and hoped that you could clearly see
this friend to keep eternally.

The second time within your arms,
I felt your heart beyond your charms.
I fell in love with you that night,
but kept the words far out of sight.

I’ve tried to show love known by few
while chancing that it might scare you.
I risk the pain that you might say,
“I don’t need love, please go away!”

This love I give may be for naught
for I don’t know your every thought;
but faith is not an idle test,
and for my God, I give my best.

I sometimes lay awake at night
wishing I could hold you tight;
I sometimes cry a little, too,
because my heart is missing you.

I do not share this open heart
without the fear of breaking parts
from risking that I’ll hear you say,
“I don’t need love, please go away!”
