I'd Like to be a Bird

by HarryT

Little boy said, “I’d like to be
as free as the little bird singing in
that big, old, oak tree

His grandpa said, “Do you
think those little birds are really
so fancy free?”

“Yes, the boy said, “They rise up so high
in the sky, they seem without worry, soaring
about I wish I could fly and be free.”

“Well,” the old man said, “let’s
think about what you just said, maybe
you may change your thoughts, let's see
what you might come to believe…

Let me ask," he said, "would you actually
want to be a bird and live in a backyard
tree?
Have to fend off squrrels and other enemies, a
dangerous thing don’t you quite agree?
Or
Sleep in a nest made of
mud, sticks and twine
Or
Worry about where to find
your next meal always
on your mind?

You see, my son, a bird’s life is hard as can be
they have little control, even though they can fly
they simply are not as free as you and me
I hope, now, you understand, the true reality of
being a bird, and living by God’s divine decree

“Yes," the boy said, "thank you,
Grandpa, for explaining to me I now
know and clearly can see how
lucky we humans are the way
God created us to be.”
