Father of Daughters

by Reese Turner

Oh, the foolish dreams and plans of young men…
Allow me to admit the costs and guilt which came
When I said, “Someday I would live in a house filled
With beautiful women.” What followed is my blame.

In time, I took a wife, a lovely lady, indeed.
I barely felt the bit inserted in between my teeth.
Then, our Lord, at times who shows great humor,
Answered me: three daughters He did bequeath.

Like most men, I was sure our first would be
A boy, to carry on my name and tradition
But a little girl now in pink and in my arms
Grabbed my heart and changed my position!

Then came number 2, do you know a number 2?
They are louder, prouder, and hell bent to be
Number 1, in fact.  Although a sweet charmer,
Never doubt her claim, “It is ALL about me!”

Now, number 3? We should have stopped at 2!
Hardly passed a day without drama at the max!
Yet, she’s become the “Block off the old chip”
She will choose my rest home. These are facts.

A treatise of fathers and daughters should not
Ignore those most challenging teen years,
So, you hold tight, but not too tight, you
Listen, but not agree, at 18, you wipe their tears…

“Rest in Peace, Ye Father of Daughters” –
A perfect gravestone epitaph for me?
Perhaps, but, “His Wishes Came True” better
Tells how great “Father of Daughters” can be.
