Look What I Found!

by Y. M. Roger

Way deep in the forest,
Near old Echo Holler –
Under a small ledge,
Was this silver dollar…

And if not for fortune
(And my trip on a root!),
I may not have seen it,
‘long my normal commute…

Once down on eyelevel
With the scene under there,
Completely mesmerized,
I just lay there and stared…

Under there on that coin,
Oh, the insects had made
A real-live carousel
Hidden down in the shade!

The big Daddy-Long-Legs
Sat right in the middle,
And off to the side was
June Bug on his filddle…

With wings just a-flappin’,
A big hummer named Kyle,
Supplied just enough breeze
To make Dad a turnstile…

Round and round on his tum,
Daddy spun as he sang,
“Come on ev’rybody
If you think you can hang!”

Well, the ants and the mites
And a dozen more fleas,
Hopped aboard and grabbed hold
Of Dad’s legs and his knees…

The sounds of the insects,
All their laughter and song,
Soon enticed a few worms
To come wiggle along!

Oh, the carousel spun,
The Big Daddy robust –
June’s tunes called for dancing
That soon kicked up some dust…

And you’ve probably guessed
What all that dust managed –
Though I tried to stifle,
My sneeze was titanic!

Kyle quickly flew off
To avoid flying worms
That headed for Daddy,
Who, of course, stopped his turns…

Then those whirligig worms
Threw ants ‘n’ mites pell-mell,
And the fleas they all jumped,
But oh! the carousel…

‘Twas a bug tumbleweed
With June and his fiddle –
As it rolled out of sight,
I just had to giggle…

For there, in the forest,
Near old Echo Holler,
I was trippin’ and found
This cool silver dollar!
