Beauty's Pain

by Y. M. Roger

He kisses her gently one last time,

Eyes whispering more than words will say –

Resolute – she’s made her choice sublime,

This time she’ll be going home to stay...

On feet that find her house through pure rote,

Restrained now to wear the mask she’s made –

The broken heart lodged in Beauty’s throat

Unleashes the pain of true love betrayed...

Rainy Spring days and hot Summer nights,

Each child’s calendar packed with events –

Dawns assure she’s her husband’s delight,

How she prays her heart would be content...

Even the good times find but an echo,

A hollow sense that something’s amiss –

Rare is Beauty who finds her true beau,

Then, for her vow, lets him go with a kiss...
