My mother-in-law

Goodnight Irene

by jaybird1

My mother-in-law, Irene by name
is the leader of her clan.
She's ninety-three, you surely see
why I became her fan.

Though struck by polio at two,
that didn't dim her fire.
To work and strive and keep her drive,
remained her big desire.

She wedded, birthed and schooled her kids,
that alone should merit fame.
Seven lively kids she brought forth
and one of them I claim.

It seems a shame, some garner fame,
while others stay unknown.
But few amidst life's mingling crowds,
know courage, like she's shown.

It's getting late, so now I go
to think on other themes.
To quote I'll say "Goodnight Irene,
I'll see you in my dreams".---1998
