I read the Bible to gain wisdom and understanding

God's Word, My Lighthouse

by Gail Denham

With the Bible open before me, I feel God present. He speaks through His word. I may not understand everything I read, but because I know the Author, I'm confident the text will be clear in time.

I'm reminded of times as a child when, from my bed, I heard my parents talking in the kitchen. My mother might be making cookies, and my father working on a project (he often had pheasant eggs hatching on the table). Lying there in the dark, I didn't understand all they said, but the sound of their voices gave me security. I knew they loved and supported me.

Often in the midst of their conversation, they would call to my sister and me: "Are you kids in bed? Lights should be out by now." Or they'd come to the bed, place a hand on our foreheads, saying: "Good night. Sleep well."

God's Word does that for me. As I read the Bible, a verse becomes clear. The words seem written for my current situation, with my attitude in mind.

Perhaps I'm angry at another. The Bible tells me: "In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry. Do not give the devil a foothold." (Eph. 4: 26-27. The Bible admonishes and instructs. The Bible is a lighthouse, guiding me.

Other times, It seems as if one verse was placed on the page to give me peace, erase fears, or offer hope. It's as if God places a soothing hand on my forehead and says: "I'm in charge. Rest now."

Philippians 4:6-7 says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus". This verse I often repeat to myself on those nights when I can't sleep because of some worry. Since I'm a high-stressed person, this has become my "go-to" verse.

I'm convinced that God lives, that He communicates love, comfort, and guidance through every page of His Word. He loves me. He loves the world and is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance through His Son, Jesus Christ, and experience His peace.

Faith writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a story or essay about faith.

I've been a Christian since I was nine. Dear Mrs. Sherlock, my Sunday School teacher, the sweet lady who loved to present the flannel board story of Paul's travels. We came to know them well.
She said, "Gail, do you want to ask Jesus into your heart?" I sure did. So I knelt by that folding chair and prayed.
However, only in my early twenties did I understand my sinfulness and bowed in real repentance. Each day I learn something new from God's Word. The Word is alive and always speaks to me in my need. I'm grateful over and over for God's mercy to me, to our family.
