The Strand of Pearls

by Sugarray77

As the pearls slip through my fingers
soft and silky to the touch,
I recall the day you gave them
when our laughter meant so much.

We danced that night to old, smooth songs
while awaiting wedding bells,
in our private world of two, now,
there's a story each pearl tells.

As our journey ventured forward
each pearl knotted in its place,
I remember sharing moments
when we struggled or gave grace.

Each high or low assigned to one
for our story it would tell,
the death of one, the birth of two,
times this strand knows very well

Through the motion of the seasons
and each cycle of the year,
adding our meanings to the strand
precious moments held so dear

As the final pearl is labeled
it's appropriate it seems,
to lay our strand completed, put
to rest with all of our dreams.

We'll walk together some day hence
wading heaven's golden sea,
for now, I'll hold our strand of pearls
pretending you walk with me.
