Yesterday, in comfy chair, with drawing book in hand,
And everything I needed to begin,
I started drawing circles, then a still life bowl of fruit,
Learning different ways of shading in.
 
A smallish branch with just three leaves was next in line for me,
I thought I’d need it for my “first-day-goal:”
A total tree—a great big tree—is what I want to draw
But leaves aren’t called for, here, I soon was “told.”
 
After trial and error, I have finished with my tree;
I feel so good I’m bustin’ at the seams.
I think my dear old Daddy has been looking down on me,
And grinnin’ ’cause he handed down the genes.
 
My father began painting with oils at 70!  He was quite good.
