I Said No

by jmshumate

The day we met, when your mom had to go,
where would we be, if I hadn't said no?

A family asked, after you were born,
can we raise her as ours, if you're too torn?

In every tribulation that came our way,
you've been my blessing from heaven since that day.

I wouldn't hear your laugh, or see your smile,
known your tears or fears as you walked new mile,

I'd never get to hug, or kiss you goodnight,
tell you it'll be ok when life gives you fright.

Never would I know, how really smart you are,
nor be there to see, when you drive your first car.

Where have the years gone, I wonder today,
how you have grown, now your sixteenth birthday.

Never ever would I know, the woman your growing to be,
If I hadn't said no, to giving up the gift, God's given me.

Sixteen years ago, my beautiful daughter Shelby was born, twelve hours later my first wife passed away. I was approached by one of her family members who thought I might not be able to raise her, and they offered to take her in as their own. I said NO! I love you my Shelbers, you are a blessing in my life.
