General poem about writing hooks.

Hooks

by Chris Davies

We're all aware of fishing hooks
and the wiggly worms they skewer.
But what about those writing hooks
and the readers they try to lure?

The primary hook to sell your book
is the very first sentence you write.
But it doesn't end there, and writer beware
you must continue your fans to ignite.

In genre fiction of the thriller type
A good murder scene always flies
Danger and action can be your hype
Keeping your pages glued to their eyes

The line above may have caused a surprise
it's another kind of hook authors use.
Give them a jolt before they bolt
and your book the readers will prize

The question hook is the easiest one
It leaves your readers wondering
what happens next or how was it done?
The page turning noise will be thundering.

A well-placed sigh or emotional cry
may keep your audience involved.
A peek in the bedroom or let romance die
And your readership goals may be solved.

An evocative description may be the prescription
that publishers are looking for.
Unexpected events might be the compulsion,
you don't know what will open that door.

Keep the hooks coming
and your books will be thrumming
and flying off of the shelves.
That's the secret we tell to ourselves.
