When Lead Isn't Good Enough

by fm wright

FADE IN: EXT. STREETS-NIGHT

A police car is moving along in a manner appropriate to response to a silent alarm.

INT. POLICE CAR-NIGHT

OFFICER HOLMES, a male of mature years, though still in good physical condition, is in the driver's seat. OFFICER FLETCHER ,though not a rookie, is clearly younger. Her eyes are directed towards the buildings.

FLETCHER
(pointing)
Just up ahead.

EXT. STREETS-NIGHT

As the police car pulls up on scene SUCCESSIVE GUNSHOTS can be heard coming from an alleyway.

Guns drawn, Holmes and Fletcher exit the vehicle and make their way to the alley.

EXT. ALLEYWAY-NIGHT

On one side dumpsters are pushed together to form a barricade. Opposite this, is a vacant store building. Street lights allow for some visibility on either end.

After entering the alleyway Holmes and Fletcher are pulled behind the dumpsters by JASON, a well endowed young looking male, dressed in typical blue jeans and a T-shirt, and LAUREN, a fairly tall, young appearing female, whose weight is proportionate to her size. She is wearing blue jeans and a conservative top.

HOLMES
What's going on here?

JASON
The ones we're firing against
have something we don't want
them to have.

FLETCHER
What's that?

JASON
Silver.

FLETCHER
As in jewelry?

LAUREN
And other things.

HOLMES
What are you, vigilantes?

JASON
Protectors.

As GUNFIRE continues to be exchanged, Fletcher gets on her personal cell phone.

FLETCHER
(into cell phone)
We're in an intense situation here.
Send backup.

Getting off the phone, she turns to Lauren.

FLETCHER
(continuing)
Why didn't they just make a
getaway?

LAUREN
We have them boxed in.

HOLMES
There's more of you?

LAUREN
Yes.

Holmes and Fletcher both run out of bullets.

Jason reaches into a backpack with gloved hands and extracts some bullets, some of which he portions over to the two officers.

Holmes looks closely at the bullets. They are made of silver.

HOLMES
Who do you think you are, the
Lone Ranger?

JASON
There are times when lead isn't
good enough.

When SIRENS SCREAM in the distance, Jason and Lauren put on backpacks and charge across the alley towards the building, moving with inhuman speed.

WOLF HOWLS SOUND from all directions.

EXT. SIDEWALK-DAWN

Footsore and weary, Holmes and Fletcher trudge towards their police car.

HOLMES
Well, that was useless. We've
scoured the entire neighborhood,
and no one will admit to knowing
anything.

FLETCHER
Out of fear, do you think?

HOLMES
Possibly. If so, of what I don't
know. I do suspect that those
so called protectors were
hiding something.

FLETCHER
Well, I couldn't even venture a
guess as to what.

HOLMES
At this point, neither could I.

FLETCHER
Let's hope that the bullet casings
the other unit took in for testing
will get better results.

HOLMES
Yeah, it will most likely have to be
the casings themselves, as I'd be
surprised if there were any finger
prints to go on. .

FLETCHER
I don't know about you, but those
weird howling noises sent a chill
up my spine.

HOLMES
I don't mind telling you they made
more than a few hairs stand up on
the back of my neck. I'm going to
say we've done all we can for one
night.

Reaching the car Holmes opens up the driver's door.

HOLMES
(continuing)
Well, I'll be.

FLETCHER
What is it?

HOLMES
Look for yourself.

On the floorboard, is a partially opened bag, exposing its contents of sterling silver jewelry.

FLETCHER
The captain is never going to
believe this. Any of this.

HOLMES
I'm not sure I do.
