Yesterday We Read The Tomes

by Bill Schott

Presuming there is someone who will read
these words, which I have summoned for that cause;
I pen this post to toast that dying breed,
who earn their lit'racy and my applause.

It seems like yesterday we read the tomes,
of which we drained such stories from their words;
one instance where some hobbits left their homes,
another where a town was cursed with birds.

But now, there is seldom lone perusal,
so few are entertained by written text;
items to be read meet with refusal --
a shallow generation is what's next.

So if you have some children, make them whole,
let reading build her brain, his heart, their soul.
