Ah, Halloween; don't you love a scary story? Even though we don't care for it the children thrive on it. Witches and ghouls aren't the only haunts of a hallowed eve. Monsters choose the Halloween season to bring their evil to light.
Growing up we all went camping and told scary stories by the campfire with family and friends. Yes, it was during Halloween.
Halloween is the perfect time to tell ghoulish tales, some ranking from frightfully to nightmarish and those tend to be our families favorite's.
Grandpa had a whole passel of Halloween stories, perfect for the younger generation that wern't too scary about good witches, friendly ghosts, magic, black cats and jack-lanterns. Everyone would sit around in a circle and listen for hours on end to his favorite stories.
Halloween gets everyone excited about the most spookiest season of the year. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve and Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick -or- treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes, and eating sweet treats.
This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter yet to come. It was believed it was the time when the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.
On this particular night during Halloween, it is said a man was hitching on the side of the road. He was heading home after a night of Halloween fun out with his buddies. He was ecstatic when a car stopped. He had just about given up all hope of catching a ride home. It was warm when he left to hang out with his buddies, but now it had turned off cold. Damn, he thought, "What else could happen to him on this freaking night?"
He opened the door to get out of the weather before he realized there was no one behind the wheel as they drove off. As his panic set in, he looked at the road and saw there was a curve coming his way.
Scared beyond belief he thought he was a goner. He began to pray as he never ever had before. A hand appeared through the half-open window and moved the wheel. He was scared shitless, he didn't know what to do or say he was speechless.
What was happening he thought, what the hell was going on. Every time the car came to a curve the hand was back guiding it around the curve. Finally coming to his senses he gathered what little courage he could muster up and opened the door and jumped out of the car.
Falling into a snow bank he checked himself to make sure he was okay then ran as fast as his legs could carry him into the town ahead. There he ran into the closest restaurant to get warm.
Settling himself into a booth he ordered himself a hot cup of coffee and a bowl of hot soup to warm himself up. He was white as a sheet and shivering as he began to drink his coffee. Spilling some coffee on to the table from being so scared and cold.
The owner asked him if he was okay and he said: "You wouldn't believe what the hell just happened to me!"
The owner persuaded him to enlighten him on what happened to him and once he got started he couldn't seem to shut up.
Of course, he began to embellish his story scaring the folks in the restaurant. He started telling everyone who would listen about the horrible experience he went through. They sat their awestruck thinking it was some kind of ghost having possessed the car or something.
The crowd sat there listening in silence when they realized he was crying from being scared shitless so bad.
They all came to his aid, saying everything was all right and he was safe now and nothing could happen to him there.
As time passed, he began to settle down and collect his wits about him, he began to warm up a bit after drinking one cup of coffee after another and began to relax. He had been sitting there for hours hoping to catch a ride with one of the truckers going his way. He sat reading the paper to pass the time waiting for a ride.
Suddenly two guys came into the restaurant.
They sat down and ordered some coffee and some breakfast talking amongst themselves.
The restaurant owner being a friendly sort with customers asked if everything was okay with them and how their day was going. They began to tell him about their ordeal of breaking down when suddenly they spied the guy at the far table. Pointing to the guy at the far table they said," Look over there that is the jerk that got in the car when we were pushing it!"
