A chapter in the book A Potpourri of Poetic Curiosities

On temperance

by CD Richards

I'd love to be a Rechabite,

but then again, perhaps I might

just take a little time out to rethink.

For all its practised piety

and flaunting of sobriety,

religion is what drives a man to drink.

Recognized

Rechabite (n.) a person who abstains from alcohol.

But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever

Jeremiah 35:6

My much-treasured Christmas present for 2017 is a book by Paul Anthony Jones: "The cabinet of linguistic curiosities". Each page contains a descriptive story about some obscure or archaic word. It occurred to me it would be a fun exercise to try and write, each day, a poem featuring the "word of the day" from the book.

Thanks for reading.
