This work has reached the exceptional level
belated rant

Oil Can Harry

Among the trash beside the country road
I found my rambling tomcat lying dead
with skinned and mangled little bodies strowed.
I slumped and cursed and sadly shook my head.

What kind of man would set a steel-jawed trap
cause cats and pups and minks to perish slow--
Outdoorsman, sportsman, that's a load of crap
I'd save for him a good warm seat Below.

And still the actors play their stupid games
the cost of which is paid by little friends
I zap right quick and call the assholes names
there's never cause for awkward painful ends.

So my poor cat was only trash tossed out
with bodies skinned and killed in awful pain.
If God were looking down I have no doubt
He'd hand our land to Injuns once again.

Ma Nature's sweet and loves us all too much,
she'll keep us safe and warm and eating well,
but flees in tears our brutal greedy clutch
and lets us turn each Eden into Hell.




It was in the late 1950s. I named the black and white kitten after the cartoon character when he fell into my dad's bucket of crankcase drainings. Harry died in a steel jawed trap and being worth nothing to the trapper, he was tossed out into an illegal trash dump with the skinned bodies of the fur animals. I think of things like this when I catch myself fretting too much about the dozers and concrete trucks roaring by...
