Lessons Learned

by country ranch writer

I write to write, I have no fancy degrees like most people who are talented here. I don't have years of writing under my belt or fancy certificates. I write by the seat of my pants, writing from the heart. I have nothing to brag about like most folks. I write to release the stress and to keep me sane with everything that's going on in my life, I needed an outlet to release my thoughts, fears, my hopes, and dreams for me and mine.
I keep a journal of my life's work and often use these journals to express what has happened in my life. I also write about the friends I have made along the way on my journeys. The friends I write about come from many walks of life; from famous rodeo riders on down to the everyday working class folks.

My flaw is in writing I have problems with punctuation and placing commas in the right places. I am still a work in progress on this. Will I ever learn? I hope sure hope so. I must be doing something right as I get a lot of good complimenrs on how much they do like my writing. I feel like I am bringing something to the table.

Writing poetry is still new to me and I am working on this constantly. I admit it, I am not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I am hanging in there trying to get the hang of it. I am way out of my genre. My genre is westerns.

Writing is my sanctuary, I can go anywhere in the world I want to, without even leaving home.I can express my feelings as I go along each and every day. Yes, I get depressed a lot lately and I know it shows in my writing but I have a lot to deal with right now. When I am down my friends give me the encouragement to keep going and making me strong. Without them, in my corner, I don't think I could keep writing as much as I do. For them, I am so grateful and they are very gifted and talented in so many ways I wish I was.

I used to think why bother? I didn't think I was good enough. Then I posted a book on Amazon. I had also put some of my books on Wid Book. But then I had forgotten about entering a publishing contest. Then one day they called me up and I was so thrilled to learn I was a finalist in their contest. I was even more thrilled to learn I had won that contest! How was that for luck? I told myself.

I was truly now an author! I felt good about myself and my hard work was finally beginning to pay off. I learned a valuable lesson. I can succeed at anything I put my mind to. Also, I learned never to give up on my dreams. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, as my Grandpa used to say. If it was meant to happen, it will happen, he used to say to me. It is what it is he'd say.

He said, be creative and entertain your audience, spread awareness about something or someone, and be able to express your thoughts. He went on to say when you write great fiction amazing things can happen, Readers find they can't put your book down. Research your subject and be sure of the facts. Making the first chapter of your story the most compelling as possible, making it irresistible and professional. Anyone can sit down and write fiction, but not everyone can sit down and start writing good fiction. It is an art that takes a lot of patience, practice and determination.

Fiction is built on the curiosity of readers. Fiction writing is strongest when characters face tough odds and still come through in the end.

Writing is a part of who you are, not just as a past time writing is your life. Being a writer isn't how much money you make but how important writing is in your life. Stop worrying that you'll never be good enough writer, and embrace the inner critic.
