The Role of the Poet

by Joan E.

among stirring woods
surrounded by inspiration
trees enshrine poems

We need poets to remind us of the blatant beauty of nature--to provide us with nourishment for renewed imagination. Poets are artists who paint in words the movement of the heart, divining from the particular to discover the universal. They sort sunshine from shadows, pause for a look--a sigh--a smile--and behold the truth of life.

We are entranced by the sight of distant goals, but poets can force us to glance for a moment at the majestic rawness of the human condition

words carved in bark
and scents spread by breezes
mind's eye stunned

Haibun is a relatively short prose piece that includes at least one haiku of approximately 5-7-5 syllables.
