Makai the dolphin finds enemy mines

Persian Gulf Dolphins

by Aussie

Beneath the murky waters deep
Enemy mines sway and sleep
Makai lay on handler's raft
Whistle signal sends him aft

Over the side he flips
Makai in his element trips
Marker float attached to nose
Click, click, click, off he goes

His sonar working, away from shore
Off old cars, metal and tins galore
Intelligent Makai, winning grins
Can't fool him, no enemy wins

Murky waters thick with silt it seems
He needs no eyes, his sonar beams
Found that sleeping deadly mine
Buried his marker deep this time

Makai used his bottle-nose
To place red marker where it shows
Bobs to surface to show allied men
Lives saved again and again

Rhyming Poem contest entry

Contest entry for rhyming poem: 2003, Makai was only one of many dolphins used to detect underwater mines in the Port of Umm Qasr in the Gulf of Persia. US, UK and many other forces used dolphins to seek out and mark enemy mines. Not always perfect according to sonar readings. Still saved ships and men.
