After Sundown

by LIJ Red

A day is good for toil or flight
From things we see, we flee or fight
The Lord gave eyes that need the light
Each sunset takes away my sight
Remembering, I fear the night.

Soon dusk will rise and flood the Earth
Up comes the moon, she's dim and pale
Now we shall see what hours are worth
Down from sad trees the bright leaves sail
On far-off hills coyotes cry
Where hapless creatures flee and die
Not heard by cold stars in the sky.
