The Adalwolf

by scongrove

The author has placed a warning on this post for violence.

Previously...

Now that Abbey finally put an end to the ruthless scientist who killed her father, and kept her prisoner for years, torturing her with endless lab experiments, she had to warn her beloved Steven that he was in danger.

Before Dr. Autenburg had met his end, he was hired by Valkin Steele—a billionaire client that funded his research—to locate an Adalwolf with the power to heal his dying mistress. And Steven was the target.

During her escape, Abbey was caught off guard and tranquilized by Valkin Steele’s body guard, Roman Kincaid. Just as she thought all hope was lost, her luck finally turned around. Roman, who was also an Adalwolf, promised Abbey he would keep her safe, and help her reunite with Steven. Left with no other choice, Abbey could only pray Roman was a man of his word.

Now that Abbey is in good hands—protected by Roman and a team of Special Ops—the next step is reuniting her with her beloved, Steven.
As Steven and Abbey finally reunite, she is introduced to the others in the Covenant as they meet Roman and his team of Special Ops—Lena, Justice, and Bull—to prepare for more allies to show.

After Sebastian refuses to hand over his son to Lucifer, he becomes trapped in a state of unconsciousness and forced to face the forgotten trauma of his childhood. But before Lucifer unleashes his wraith, he rips into Sebastian’s throat as Eve watches helplessly.

Meanwhile, the guard calls for help and Sebastian is taken from the mental institute and transferred to a nearby hospital where Dr. Helen Carrington cares for his injuries. While Helen is successful at stabilizing Sebastian, for some unexplainable reason, even after he’s administered Breedline blood, he remains unconscious. As Helen informs the institute’s guards of Sebastian condition and that he will be moved to the intensive care unit where he will be monitored twenty-four seven, she is confronted by a young woman named Anna, claiming to be Sebastian’s long lost sister.

While engaging in conversation, Anna explains to Helen Sebastian is not actually blood related, only that her mother raised Sebastian, but she considers him to be her brother nonetheless.

As Sebastian continues to suffer Lucifer’s torture, Helen explains to Anna the reason why Sebastian was placed into the mental institute, and of his crimes against the Breedline.

Continued...

Roman Kincaid never knew anyone was in the hotel room until he felt the cold steel against his throat. He went utterly still, not wanting to do anything to make the blade slice into his flesh. He was calm enough not to shake, but that didn’t mean his heart wasn’t about to explode from his chest.

“What do you want?” Roman demanded in a gritty but steady voice.

“I need information on a particular Adalwolf,” the man murmured behind his ear. “And I understand you have a connection with the Breedline Covenant.”

“Who?”

The knife bit farther into Roman’s neck, and he gritted his teeth against the burn.

“Don’t play games with me. You know who I’m looking for. I know the Breedline are keeping the Adalwolf in their Covenant. I want their location.”

Roman’s lip curled in anger, but he held his tongue. Pissing off this guy would only get his throat cut.

And suddenly, the knife was gone, and Roman suddenly felt the end of a pistol dug into the back of his head.

“Get up,” the man growled. “And turn around. Slowly. If you try anything stupid, my brother will blow your buddy here ...,” he paused momentarily and said, “Hey Joey, what’s his name?”

“Lawrence,” a voice called out from the doorway.

“Like I said,” the man continued to threaten Roman, “my brother will blow Lawrence’s brains out with a single silver bullet.”

Roman closed his eyes, knowing there was no way out of this. He could take the risk and fight back. Silver didn’t affect him, but it would kill Lawrence. He couldn’t gamble with his buddy’s life.

He slowly rose with his hands up. Before he could turn around, a firm hand gripped his shoulder and roughly shoved him. Roman stumbled and quickly steadied his feet. As he turned around and looked up, he recognized the man that held a gun to his face. It was Gordon Bates. He was a tracker ... obviously hired by Valkin Steele.

Roman’s pulse accelerated, and his gut twisted. He dreamed of having Steele at his mercy. He’d conjured up some harsh images of all the ways the bastard would die a long, painful death.

“Hands where I can see them,” Gordon barked. “If you as much as move a finger, your buddy Lawrence is a dead man.”

In his periphery, Roman saw Lawrence. He had a gun aimed at his forehead. Lawrence was a big man. A true warrior. Trained by the best. But right now they were both as helpless as newborn babes.

“We’re not giving you the location,” Lawrence blurted. “You’ll just have to kill us.”

“Is this how you want it to go down?” Gordon asked Roman. “Are you willing to let your buddy take a bullet?” He leaned in close to Roman and looked him square in the eyes. “It’s all up to you.”

“Screw you, Bates,” Lawrence snarled. “Roman, don’t you do it, do you hear me? Don’t tell him a damn thing.”

Gordon’s jaw tightened. “We’ve been looking for that she-wolf bitch that murdered Dr. Autenburg for years. And now she’s led us straight to the Adalwolf,” he seethed, relishing the savage glint in Roman’s eyes. “Mr. Steele will be pleased when I deliver the Adalwolf to him. He’ll finally give me the respect I deserve and realize he didn’t need Cole Decker after all.”

He got Roman’s attention. The name Cole Decker sent a hot flash down Roman’s body. Then he quickly glanced at Lawrence. He had the same recognition in his eyes.

Cole Decker was known for being one of the best trackers money could buy, and had a warrant for trafficking young girls to Europe. Decker was also listed as a sex offender. He liked them young, preferably in the range of twelve to sixteen. The sick bastard had been in hiding for years. Above all things, Roman had a soft spot for children. Not only was Roman vowing to take down Steele, but Cole Decker was also now on his list.

Roman focused intently on Gordon. He curled his lip in disgust, his agitation level off the charts. He had an objective, and he was single-minded in his determination to kill these two human bastards and keep Lawrence from getting killed in the process.

“Well, I’m waiting for an answer, Kincaid,” Gordon said, a clear smirk in his voice. “I’m running out of patience.”

Go to hell, Roman thought bitterly. A righteous fury rose up inside him like a gathering storm. An angry heart pumped the Adalwolf blood through his body, infusing Roman with strength worthy of a ten Breedline. With an unexpected burst of power, he drove Gordon backward with a hard, thrusting kick.

Gordon reeled backward, his eyes wild, astonished by Roman’s sudden attack. It all seemed to happen in slow motion. As Gordon hit the floor, his pistol fell from his grip and clattered to the floor.

Roman no longer looked human. His eyes were two shimmering diamonds. His skin shone like smoky gray as it expanded twice the size, shredding his clothes into pieces. Powerful muscles bulged atop his bare chest and claws jutted from his hands and feet.

Gordon gasped with his jaw gaped wide. “Son of a bitch! He’s an Adalwolf!”

Then, without warning, several pops followed, the unmistakable sound of a silencer. Pain sliced through Roman’s back and into his chest. His knees buckled, and he pitched forward, agony tearing through his body.

A furious roar shattered the moment. The guy who’d fired his weapon at Roman staggered backward as Lawrence lunged forward, his Breedline jaws snapping like a rabid dog. Instinct had taken over. A blood red haze descended over Lawrence’s vision as he raked his claws across the enemy’s neck, digging deep gouges in his flesh.

Blood spouted like a fountain. The man clutched at his mangled throat, but there was no recovering from such a wound. Not any human, for that matter. He tried to scream out, but all that emerged from his gaping mouth was a wet gurgle. His limbs twitched convulsively as he drowned in his own blood. It pooled underneath him, soaking into the carpet. Finally, he fell still and silent.

“No!” An anguished cry erupted from Gordon’s throat. The sight of his brother’s death threw him into a murderous rage. He reached for the gun and sprang to his feet like a demon freshly released from hell. As Gordon aimed toward Lawrence, a hand closed on his throat, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. He gasped for breath as Roman squeezed, drawing blood with his claws.

Gordon stared at Roman with absolute shock, his dark eyes filling with blood as the bones in his neck cracked and popped. As Roman felt Gordon’s human life ebbing away, he released his grip. Gordon’s limp and lifeless body toppled to the floor.

Roman felt the warm, sticky sensation of blood. He smelled it. He looked down to see his chest was covered with both his blood and Bates. After a moment of silence, Roman turned toward Lawrence. He was back to his human form, his expression hard and cold. Roman could get a chill just from looking at the guy.

“Are you okay?” Lawrence asked in a deep baritone.

“Yeah,” he said. Roman scrubbed his hands over his bare chest, but all he did was smear more of the blood on his hands.

Lawrence grabbed his pants from the floor and snorted in disgust. His clothes were shredded to pieces. And then he looked up and met Roman’s gaze. “Remind me to thank your mom for marrying an Adalwolf,” Lawrence said, releasing a heavy sigh. “You saved my ass. Thank you, Roman.”

“You’re welcome, Lawrence. You would have done the same for me,” Roman said, his voice distorted as he transformed back to human again. “We’ve got to warn the others.”

As Bull, Justice, and Lena roared up to the hotel, they noticed a suspicious vehicle parked by Roman and Lawrence’s SUV. They got out, guns drawn, and then Lena discarded every single thing she knew about caution and ran.

Ignoring the angry shouts from Justice and her brother to wait until they cleared the area, Lena burst through the hotel door. Nothing could have prepared her for the sight of Roman and Lawrence completely naked, covered in blood. And on the floor, lying in a pool of blood, were two men she didn’t recognize.

Roman’s gaze lifted to Lena’s, and then he quickly placed his hands over his crotch to cover his privates.

Lawrence reached for his torn shirt and placed it around his waist.

“Holy shit,” Justice breathed as he caught up to Lena and the sight before him.

“What the hell is wrong with you, Lena?” Bull called out as he shoved inside. Then he looked past his sister and focused on Lawrence and Roman. Bull blinked and shook his head. “What the hell happened here?”

“Nice timing, guys,” Lawrence said lightly.

Bull stepped inside and closed the door behind him. “I take it this is Valkin Steele’s doing?”

“Yeah,” Roman replied. “We need to warn the Breedline Covenant. Steele knows they are keeping Steven there.”

“Shit!” Justice swore. “How in the hell did he find out?”

“They’re trackers,” Lawrence said. “One of them is Gordon Bates. Before we took them out, he mentioned Steele hired Cole Decker.”

“Son of a bitch,” Lena said under her breath. “If Decker is involved, we can’t afford to waste any more time. While you two warn the Covenant and get cleaned up, we’ll take care of the mess here. As soon as we’re done, we’ll head that way and meet you there.”

Roman slowly nodded his acceptance. “Thanks, Lena.”

As Helen stood outside Sebastian’s room, her hands fidgeted with the lapels of her white coat and then the stethoscope in her pocket. She took a deep breath and lightly tapped on the door before she peeked inside. “Anna?”

Helen’s voice echoed into the room, but Anna felt as if the physician was miles away. In fact, the whole world was somewhere else, nothing existed except for her brother lying in the hospital bed still as water.

Anna finally glanced over her shoulder at Helen. “Thank you for giving me this time with my brother, Dr. Carrington,” Anna said in a low voice.

When Helen stepped inside, she moved next to Anna. “Please, call me Helen.” She placed her hand on Anna’s shoulder in a gesture of comfort. “I promise we’ll do everything we can for him, Anna.”

“I don’t understand,” Anna said, keeping her eyes locked on Helen. “Why isn’t he healing?”

Helen shook her head. “I wish I had the answer to that. There’s no medical reason why Sebastian is not healing. Not only have I administered him Eve’s blood, but I’ve also donated mine. Considering his species, my Breedline blood alone should have healed him. Sebastian shouldn’t be in a coma. It’s almost as if he doesn’t want to wake up, or someone is keeping—”

Anna stared at Helen confused. “Please, Helen. What were you going to say? Is there something you’re not telling me?”

Helen’s lips formed a thin line. “I just spoke with Tim Ross, the head council of the Breedline Covenant,” she said, exhaling a deep breath. “He told me something that didn’t make any sense, but I guess it could be possible.”

“Please, Helen,” Anna pleaded. “Tell me.”

“Sebastian’s bonded mate Eve was at the institution when this happened. She said something or someone was in his room with your brother, but it wasn’t visible to the eye. Eve stated that before Sebastian went unconscious, he told her something. It was about their son, Arius. Sebastian warned Eve not to let Lucifer have Arius.”

“Lucifer?”Anna queried. “Are you actually talking about ... Satan?”

“Yes.”

“Helen, would it be possible for me to meet Eve?”

Helen nodded. “Of course, Anna. I’ve already spoken to Tim. He knows about your situation, and he’s invited you to stay at the Covenant. You can meet Eve and your nephews.”

“Thank you, Helen,” Anna said, her eyes wet with tears. “I can’t thank you enough for all your kindness.”

“You’re welcome, Anna.”

Book of the Month contest entry

NOTE: This is not part of the chapter. A reference for terms and cast of characters, especially for new readers:

BREEDLINE - A species of humans that have the ability to change from human form into a wolf. They are not like the old legend of the Lycanthropy myth. Breedline species can shift into their wolf at will. The moon has no power over them. They do not pass their ability to other humans with a bite or scratch like the Lycanthropy myth.
The Breedline gene is passed down to offspring that are born identical twins. Although they live among humans, their species must be kept secret.
In wolf form, they have super strength, speed, and heightened senses. Compared to humans, Breedlines have tremendous advantages when it comes to health. Their bodies heal fast and are not subject to illnesses or diseases. The only thing that slows their healing process is silver. It is their kryptonite. Besides old age, a silver bullet to the brain is the only thing deadly to the species.
All males change into their wolf at the age of eighteen. Females do not go through the change until they make love to their Breedline bonded mate.

BREEDLINE TWINS - Identical twins that are born from either one or both parents of the Breedline species. They have a strong, unbreakable bond from birth, are born with telepathic abilities, and have the power to sense the other's emotions or injuries. In some cases, the bond between twins is so strong, that if one dies, the other twin may pass on, especially if they don't have a mate.

BREEDLINE BONDING - The male Breedline spends their life in search of their bonded mate. When the male comes in contact with her, he instantly feels a simultaneous, desirable attraction and she becomes the most important thing in his life. He is there to love, protect, and cherish her until death. Once they are mated, they bond for life. It is possible for them to have more than one mate in their lifespan.

BELOVED - A word used by a Breedline to express the bond to their mate.

DOUBLE BONDED - In some cases, male Breedline twins bond with the same female but one will carry a stronger bond. Usually one of them must sacrifice for the other twin.

BREEDLINE COVENANT - The Breedline species must live within the boundaries of a Covenant, which is only formed with their species. The Covenant is governed and ruled by a head council. The council keeps their laws in order and oversees the species population.

THE BREEDLINE QUEEN - Over centuries the Breedline Covenant is ruled by a true queen. If there is no queen living, the Covenants are governed by an appointed head council until another one is born. A Breedline queen is born once every one hundred years. Her massive stature, black fur, and red eyes are the queen's trademarks. Her alpha wolf has twice the strength, speed, and size of any Breedline. The queen is expected to rule over all the Breedline Covenants where she will be respected and obeyed by all Breedline. This is their absolute True Law.

THE QUEENS RING - This ring has been passed down to all Breedline queens for generations. When the new queen places the ring on, it instantly shifts in size to fit her finger.

TRUE LAW - All Breedline Covenants have an ancient book of laws. If either sex disobeys the Breedline laws, they can be shunned, or no longer protected by their Covenant. If a Breedline takes another life out of revenge, or evil - other than protecting their life, and the life of another - they will never have the ability to shift back human and cast out as a rogue wolf.

ROGUE WOLF - A Breedline shunned by their Covenant for taking another life out of revenge or evil and forced to live as a wolf until death without the ability to change human again. Some rogue wolves form into packs, which can be dangerous for other Breedline species.

RED (BLOOD) MOON - When the full moon passes through the amber shadow of the earth, producing a midnight eclipse visible across North America. So begins a lunar eclipse tetrad, a series of four consecutive total eclipses occurring at approximately six-month intervals. This incredible light beams into the heart of earth's shadow, filling it with a coppery glow and transforming the moon into a great red orb. During this time, all Breedline species that are mated have a strong desire to create an offspring. This is also a time when Breedline females are more fertile for the conception of twins.

SUCCUBUS (a.k.a. CREEPERS) - Creatures that search for, and feeds off the blood of the Breedline species. Creepers are skilled at extreme sexual pleasure, and the ecstasy they create is exceedingly intense and highly addictive. They cast off a scent that hypnotizes Breedlines into overwhelming sexual urges. They use their human-like bodies and beautiful features to control and influence their thoughts.
They have the ability to reach into the Breedline's mind during sleep, casting a spell of dreams about sexual contact, or intercourse. And one much less obvious manifestation of Creepers is nightmares - realistic, graphic, terrifying nightmares that rob the Breedline of sleep. Over a period, it can lead to severe fatigue and depression, leaving them emotionally and spiritually drained. Death can occur if they ultimately take over the Breedline's body.

HALF-BREED - This species is born with the genes from both Breedline and succubus. They can bond with either a full-blood Breedline or another half-breed. They cannot change into the Breedline wolf, but they do need blood from them to survive. With the power to hypnotize, most Breedlines have minimal respect and credence toward the half-breed species.

WICCA (or Wise One) - According to the Breedline species, a Wicca is the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts, and necromancy. A Wicca is also considered to be a demonic spirit. It is unclear to the Breedline if they act under the orders of the devil, or they are simply not understood and treated as outcasts. They can do white magic (good) or dark (evil).

ADALWOLF - A species that has the power to shift from their human form into a beautiful creature, three times the size, resembling half man and half wolf. Born with super-strength, they can move from one place to another in supernatural speed. Their eyes take on the appearance of two-shimmering diamonds. With the power to regenerate their own cells, an Adalwolf will stop aging at thirty. The moon has no power over them. And an Adalwolf is immune to silver. They can bond with any species.

LUPA - The ancestors descended from the old legend of the lycanthrope, except the moon has no power over them and it cannot be passed on to others like a virus. It is passed on through genetics to the female offspring, known as a she-wolf. This type of creature shape-shifts into a therianthropic hybrid wolf-like creature, and is considered dangerous... cursed.

EVE - She is a half-breed and Sebastian's bonded mate. Growing up in human foster care, she spent her entire childhood abused until Sebastian saves her. Scorned from her past, she lashes out in anger, living a life of crime later to discover her twin sister, Mia Blackwood. After realizing the Chiang-Shih demon possesses Sebastian, Eve clings to the past in hopes of reuniting with her beloved. Now that Sebastian is finally free of the demon, she has trust issues, worried he has an alternative plan for their sons.

Sebastian Crow - He is a half-breed, and Eve's bonded mate. After he had been killed by Jace in self- defense, he was possessed by the Chiang-Shih demon after the Angel of Mercy cast him out of Alexander's body. As he tried to portray Sebastian's life, Eve finally figured out his secret. Keeping her captive only to survive on her blood, he later develops feelings for her. The demon creates a death army, determined to dominate the world and unleash his wrath among humans and the Breedline. Now free from the demon, he is determined to reunite with his beloved Eve who is kept prisoner by the Breedline Covenant awaiting trial for her past crimes against them.

Arius and Tidus - Sebastian and Eve's twin boys. Both have inherited their parent's genetics of a half-breed. But Arius carries the mark of the Chiang-Shih demon with the power to create a portal and the ability to heal others.

Steven Pasquale (a.k.a. Steven Craven) - He inherited the genes of a Breedline and an Adalwolf. He was taken from his mother and forced to endure a life of endless, painful experiments by two German physicians; Dr. Hans Autenburg and Dr. Hubert Crane. Without the knowledge of his real family, Steven finally manages to escape his captors, locating his biological parents and his fraternal twin, Tessa Fairchild.

Abbey (a.k.a. Abigail Winthrop) - She inherited the genetics of a Lupa from her mother, who died giving birth. Captured by Dr. Hans Autenburg, a German physician she spent most of her life forced to endure experiments until she finally managed to escape. With no place to go, Abbey is determined to finally reunite with her beloved Steven after they were separated years ago.

Tim Ross - He is a Breedline species and head council of the California Covenant. Angel, his bonded mate - who is a half-breed - has Tim's daughter they named Natalie, after her sister.

Dr. Helen Carrington - She is a Breedline species and a physician at the California Bates hospital for both Breedlines and humans. Later, she discovers Jace and Jem carry a gene, possibly used for a cure to stop the aging process in her species. After Alexander's demon is banished, he is pardoned for all past crimes and welcomed into the Breedline Covenant. When he meets Helen, they become bonded mates.
