After Sebastian refuses to hand over his son to Lucifer, he becomes trapped in a state of unconsciousness and forced to face the forgotten trauma of his childhood. But before Lucifer unleashes his wraith, he rips into Sebastian’s throat as Eve watches helplessly.

Meanwhile, the guard calls for help and Sebastian is taken from the mental institute and transferred to a nearby hospital where Dr. Helen Carrington cares for his injuries. While Helen is successful at stabilizing Sebastian, for some unexplainable reason, even after he’s administered Breedline blood, he remains unconscious. As Helen informs the institute’s guards of Sebastian condition and that he will be moved to the intensive care unit where he will be monitored twenty-four seven, she is confronted by a young woman named Anna, claiming to be Sebastian’s long lost sister.

While engaging in conversation, Anna explains to Helen Sebastian is not actually blood related, only that her mother raised Sebastian, but she considers him to be her brother nonetheless.

As Sebastian continues to suffer Lucifer’s torture, Helen explains to Anna the reason why Sebastian was placed into the mental institute, and of his crimes against the Breedline.

Continued...

Anna looked at Helen confused and shook her head. “I don’t understand? Sebastian was always such a good child. He would never hurt anyone.”

Helen placed her hand on Anna’s in a gesture of comfort. “People change Anna. And you said yourself it’s been years since you last saw him.”

Anna looked away to gather her composure before she broke down in front of the physician.

“I’m sorry, Anna,” Helen said softly. “I know hearing all this must be very painful. But you need to know the truth about Sebastian’s crimes against the Breedline.”

“His mother and step-father caused all this,” Anna retorted as she faced Helen. “They treated him less than human. When Sebastian was born, they tossed him aside like a piece of trash.”

“Anna,” Helen paused briefly, regretting to tell her the dreadful news, “Sebastian murdered his family.”

Anna’s eyes widened at first, and then her expression changed from shock into a mask of revulsion. “Good,” she blurted. “They all deserved to die.”

Helen’s brows clenched. “Surely you don’t mean that.”

“For what they did to my mother and ...” Anna stopped and bit back her lip as images of the past flashed before her. The horrifying memories of Sebastian’s step-father haunted the very core of her soul. She’d tried so hard to forget what had been done to her and her mother, but it all came back as if it had just happened. Anna could still feel Mr. Montgomery’s hot breath on her face and his weight atop hers like she was being raped all over again. He’d made her feel helpless and filthy, like a defenseless animal trapped in a cage. And Mrs. Montgomery knew all the while what her husband was, but turned a blind eye. Sibyl Montgomery hated Anna and blamed her husband’s sick obsessions on her. Even Camille and Edward—their son and daughter—was aware of the vile things William Montgomery had done to Anna but ignored her cries in the night. And then the painful memories of her mother’s death almost sent her over the edge.

Anna closed her eyes, and when she reopened them, she said, “I hope they all burn in hell.”

Helen lightly squeezed Anna’s hand. “I’m so sorry, dear. Whatever happened to you must have been traumatizing. Is there anything I can do to help?”

“Can I see him?” Anna asked, her eyes pleading. “Please Helen. Just for a few minutes. It would mean a great deal to me if I could see my brother after all these years.”

Helen let out a deep breath and nodded. “He’s being moved to intensive care. As soon as we get him settled, I’ll take you to see him,” she said. “Even though Sebastian is in a coma, he can still hear you. Maybe if he recognizes your voice, it will help him recover.”

Anna smiled a little. “Thank you, Helen.”

“Aw, poor Sebastian,” Lucifer said mockingly. “You’re not going to cry ... are you?”

Sebastian forced his gaze upward in response to Lucifer’s disgusting humor. He refused to let shame crawl into his soul. He had to think of a way out of this nightmare. “You’re a sick bastard,” he spat. “Why don’t you just get it over with, and put me out of my misery.”

Lucifer could tell Sebastian was visibly fighting to keep his temper in check. He crossed his arms over his chest and stared challengingly back at Sebastian. “Now, now,” he said lightly. “Don’t get your panties in a wad. We’ve still got a lot of work to do. You just wait,” Lucifer added, cocking a brow. “I’ll break you soon enough.”

Sebastian’s lips curled into a snarl, and a sound of rage burned deep in his chest and bubbled outward, vibrating his throat. He honest to God wanted to hit Lucifer. He was tired of feeling helpless. Tired of being subjected to Lucifer’s whims and control. Red anger clouded his vision. And then he rushed toward Lucifer with a vengeance. Just as Sebastian prepared to feel the impact of Lucifer’s body, he instantly vanished into thin air. He managed to gain his footing before he tripped, but he swayed like a sapling in the wind. Sebastian turned in bewilderment and then discovered he was in an entirely different place. Sebastian was now standing outside, overlooking the estate’s backyard. He couldn’t wrap his mind around how Lucifer had the power over him like a marionette’s puppeteer.

Suddenly, Sebastian’s attention was alerted when he heard sounds of children arguing. When he looked in their direction, his brows instantly furrowed. It was his older half-siblings, Camille and Edward. They were fraternal twins and looked as though they were the age of ten. Sitting nearby the edge of a man-made pond, they were fighting over a board game. Born with a silver spoon in their mouths, they’d been spoiled rotten ever since. Camille had the same personality as her mother ... and there was no fixing that shit. At an early age, she’d learned what a temper tantrum was and how it managed to work in her favor. Edward, on the other hand, was the same likeness of his father, William Edward Montgomery. Little Edward was physically perfect, firstborn son prepared to carry on the family name and bloodline. Only pure-blooded Breedlines were acceptable. The Montgomerys didn’t like defects. And in their opinion, Sebastian was the definition of the word. Being born a bastard and a half-succubus like his mother’s side of the family, Sebastian was ignored by his biological mother and his older siblings like the plague.

As Sebastian stood back in silence and watched the two brats banter back and forth, something by a nearby tree caught his eye. When he turned toward it, he saw a little boy. The same pale, scrawny boy he’d seen crying earlier. He was hiding behind a big oak, watching Camille and Edward. Was that little boy truly his younger self? Sebastian thought.

Finally, after almost thirty minutes had passed, the boy found his courage and stepped out from behind the tree. Sebastian watched as he slowly moved closer to Camille and Edward. As the boy stood wide-eyed, he nervously fidgeted with a loose thread on the seam of his sleeve.

Camille looked up at him and crinkled her nose.

“What do you want?” Edward said in a menacing tone.

The little boy stuttered his words, “C-can I play with you?”

“You’re not supposed to talk to us,” Camille bit out. “Go away!”

The boy flinched at Camille’s cruel words. As his eyes began to well up with tears, she pointed her finger and teased, “Look at the baby cry.”

Edward laughed and joined in on his sister’s heartless bullying.

Ice crept through Sebastian’s veins until he felt incapable of moving or reacting. It was heartbreaking to watch. He wanted to look away. At that moment, he knew that the little boy was indeed him. The forgotten memories of his half-siblings’ savage behavior came crashing down all at once. He’d remembered this exact day. This was the day he’d almost died.  Sebastian lowered his face into his hands and screamed, “No!”

When he heard a splash, like something being tossed into the water, he dropped his hands and saw Camille and Edward laughing and running away. And then he saw two small arms thrashing from inside the pond, desperate for help. As he rushed toward the water’s edge, the little boy was nowhere to be found. He’d sunk to the bottom like a stone.

Sebastian immediately dove in and searched for the child. But the water was too murky. The visibility underneath was pitch-black. Still, he blindly searched for the boy until his lungs burned and ached for breath. Desperate for air, he popped up to the water’s surface, gasping and choking. Oh god, help me, Sebastian pleaded silently.

That’s when he saw Anna dive into the water. When she resurfaced, she had the child snugly tucked under her arm. As she dragged him to the grassy shore, she placed her mouth over his, breathing air into his lungs.

“Oh my sweet child,” Eliza cried out as she rushed toward the pond’s edge and dropped to her knees. “Please, God,” she pleaded with her hands formed in prayer. “I beg you. Don’t take this precious angel from me.”

Tears slipped down Sebastian’s cheeks as he watched Eliza beg God for the little boy’s life. For his life.

As the boy finally gasped for air, Anna wrapped her arms around him, holding on as if she’d never let go.

“Oh, Sebastian ...,” Anna whispered against the boy’s ear. “My god, you scared me to death. I thought I’d lost you,” she said, peppering kisses to his cheek. “I couldn’t bear the thought of losing you, little brother.”

Eliza leaned forward sobbing and wrapped her arms around Anna and the child. “Thank you, dear Lord.”

The child’s voice came out raspy, barely above a whisper. “I love you, Sissy.” And then he added,” I love you, too ... Mama.”

Sebastian curled his hand into a fist. He’d never wanted to hurt someone as much as he wanted to make Camille and Edward pay. And with his step-father, rage was a living, breathing fireball inside him. Sebastian was desperate to make him suffer many times over for what he’d done to his life. He took a steadying breath, determined to keep his emotions in check. He had to stay focused and in control for his son, Arius. But the fact of the matter was, Sebastian was gutted. The reality of it all struck him as surreal. While Sebastian lay unconscious in a hospital bed, orchestrated by Lucifer, his son was in danger. One way or another, he had to find a way out of this nightmarish hell.

Later in the night, a nightmare from Eve’s childhood came to her. And yet the images were fresh and clear as if it had just happened.

Deep within her sleep, she saw a dark shadowy outline of a man’s silhouette standing in the far distance of her open bedroom door. As he moved closer, Eve quickly sat up and immediately recognized his face. When she opened her mouth to scream, her foster father, Ted, gave her a look that told her without words to shut up. Eve kept silent, every single second agonizing. Her adrenaline shot up, and her heart pounded in her chest. And then she felt a sharp stick in her arm.

Eve fell back against her pillow. Despite her heightened anxiety, the room was moving in slow motion. She tried to lift her head, but couldn’t. It felt like it weighed a ton.

As Ted stood looming over Eve, she could see the bulge in his pants. The bastard was utterly turned on by her drugged and helpless state. “No,” she croaked.

When he put his hands on her shoulders, Eve was taken back to the first time he’d forced her to endure his suffocating weight, the smell of his breath. The horrible pain he’d inflicted on her at the young age of fourteen. Eve wanted to crawl into a hole and die.

“Please,” she rasped out, her eyes begging him for mercy. “Don’t do this.”

His lips stretched into a thin line, ignoring her pleas. As he grabbed the top of her nightgown, he ripped it open, exposing her breasts. Ted’s eyes wandered down her body, staring at her with a sick satisfying gaze. She’d never felt so vulnerable in her life. It took all Eve’s effort not to allow him to see the crippling fear that exploded through her body.

Please, please, God. Help me, Eve begged silently. I need Sebastian.

At that moment, she instantly felt the presence of someone standing behind Ted. She didn’t dare look away. Eve held her breath and kept her focus on Ted.
And then a blade suddenly appeared from behind. Ted’s body stiffened and his eyes widened in surprise when he felt the cold steel against his throat.
When Eve looked up, her eyes became swamped with relief. It was Sebastian.

Sebastian bent low, hissing so Ted would be sure to hear. “How’s it feel, asshole? To know your life is in someone else’s hands ... dangling on edge.”

Panic entered Ted’s eyes when he figured out Sebastian’s intentions. “Please,” he begged. “Don’t kill me.”

Sebastian laughed and pressed the blade into his throat until a line of blood appeared.

It was then that Ted broke down, bawling like a pathetic worm. As he babbled and pleaded for his rotten life, Eve felt like the victor, not a helpless victim.

“I’ve got money,” Ted muttered around his sobs. “I’ll give you whatever you want. Please, just don’t kill me.”

Sebastian’s lips curled into a snarl. “No amount of money will save your sorry ass.”

“Wait!” Ted said in a panic.

Before he could muster out another word, Sebastian slashed his throat, cutting his windpipe. Only the sound of gurgling blood escaped Ted’s lips. As he looked at Sebastian with a blank stare, his body tilted to one side and crumpled to the floor.

Sebastian let the knife fall from his hand, clattering to the floor. His mission was done. Eve’s tortured life was over. Their revenge was complete.

A shiver took over, and Eve realized it was finally done. And then Sebastian wrapped a blanket around her shivering body and pulled her up and away from the sight of Ted’s dead body.

“It’s over, Eve,” Sebastian whispered close to her ear. “I promise. I’m going to take care of you now.”

She clung fiercely to him, never wanting him to let go. She raised her head so she could look him in the eyes. Tears gathered and slipped down her cheeks. Sebastian’s love shined from his golden gaze like the warmest light in the darkest corner of hell.

Eve awoke and bolted upright, her hand gripping her chest, her lungs gasping and yet drawing no air.

Gripping her fingers into a blanket that covered her legs, she jerked them up and over her shoulders. As Eve sought to come back to reality, her breathing echoed and rebounded, the sounds bouncing off the thin walls and multiplying until they seemed like screams.

“Sebastian,” she called out in a tear-laced voice.

NOTE: This is not part of the chapter. A reference for terms and cast of characters, especially for new readers:

BREEDLINE - A species of humans that have the ability to change from human form into a wolf. They are not like the old legend of the Lycanthropy myth. Breedline species can shift into their wolf at will. The moon has no power over them. They do not pass their ability to other humans with a bite or scratch like the Lycanthropy myth.
The Breedline gene is passed down to offspring that are born identical twins. Although they live among humans, their species must be kept secret.
In wolf form, they have super strength, speed, and heightened senses. Compared to humans, Breedlines have tremendous advantages when it comes to health. Their bodies heal fast and are not subject to illnesses or diseases. The only thing that slows their healing process is silver. It is their kryptonite. Besides old age, a silver bullet to the brain is the only thing deadly to the species.
All males change into their wolf at the age of eighteen. Females do not go through the change until they make love to their Breedline bonded mate.

BREEDLINE TWINS - Identical twins that are born from either one or both parents of the Breedline species. They have a strong, unbreakable bond from birth, are born with telepathic abilities, and have the power to sense the other's emotions or injuries. In some cases, the bond between twins is so strong, that if one dies, the other twin may pass on, especially if they don't have a mate.

BREEDLINE BONDING - The male Breedline spends their life in search of their bonded mate. When the male comes in contact with her, he instantly feels a simultaneous, desirable attraction and she becomes the most important thing in his life. He is there to love, protect, and cherish her until death. Once they are mated, they bond for life. It is possible for them to have more than one mate in their lifespan.

BELOVED - A word used by a Breedline to express the bond to their mate.

DOUBLE BONDED - In some cases, male Breedline twins bond with the same female but one will carry a stronger bond. Usually one of them must sacrifice for the other twin.

BREEDLINE COVENANT - The Breedline species must live within the boundaries of a Covenant, which is only formed with their species. The Covenant is governed and ruled by a head council. The council keeps their laws in order and oversees the species population.

THE BREEDLINE QUEEN - Over centuries the Breedline Covenant is ruled by a true queen. If there is no queen living, the Covenants are governed by an appointed head council until another one is born. A Breedline queen is born once every one hundred years. Her massive stature, black fur, and red eyes are the queen's trademarks. Her alpha wolf has twice the strength, speed, and size of any Breedline. The queen is expected to rule over all the Breedline Covenants where she will be respected and obeyed by all Breedline. This is their absolute True Law.

THE QUEENS RING - This ring has been passed down to all Breedline queens for generations. When the new queen places the ring on, it instantly shifts in size to fit her finger.

TRUE LAW - All Breedline Covenants have an ancient book of laws. If either sex disobeys the Breedline laws, they can be shunned, or no longer protected by their Covenant. If a Breedline takes another life out of revenge, or evil - other than protecting their life, and the life of another - they will never have the ability to shift back human and cast out as a rogue wolf.

ROGUE WOLF - A Breedline shunned by their Covenant for taking another life out of revenge or evil and forced to live as a wolf until death without the ability to change human again. Some rogue wolves form into packs, which can be dangerous for other Breedline species.

RED (BLOOD) MOON - When the full moon passes through the amber shadow of the earth, producing a midnight eclipse visible across North America. So begins a lunar eclipse tetrad, a series of four consecutive total eclipses occurring at approximately six-month intervals. This incredible light beams into the heart of earth's shadow, filling it with a coppery glow and transforming the moon into a great red orb. During this time, all Breedline species that are mated have a strong desire to create an offspring. This is also a time when Breedline females are more fertile for the conception of twins.

SUCCUBUS (a.k.a. CREEPERS) - Creatures that search for, and feeds off the blood of the Breedline species. Creepers are skilled at extreme sexual pleasure, and the ecstasy they create is exceedingly intense and highly addictive. They cast off a scent that hypnotizes Breedlines into overwhelming sexual urges. They use their human-like bodies and beautiful features to control and influence their thoughts.
They have the ability to reach into the Breedline's mind during sleep, casting a spell of dreams about sexual contact, or intercourse. And one much less obvious manifestation of Creepers is nightmares - realistic, graphic, terrifying nightmares that rob the Breedline of sleep. Over a period, it can lead to severe fatigue and depression, leaving them emotionally and spiritually drained. Death can occur if they ultimately take over the Breedline's body.

HALF-BREED - This species is born with the genes from both Breedline and succubus. They can bond with either a full-blood Breedline or another half-breed. They cannot change into the Breedline wolf, but they do need blood from them to survive. With the power to hypnotize, most Breedlines have minimal respect and credence toward the half-breed species.

WICCA (or Wise One) - According to the Breedline species, a Wicca is the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts, and necromancy. A Wicca is also considered to be a demonic spirit. It is unclear to the Breedline if they act under the orders of the devil, or they are simply not understood and treated as outcasts. They can do white magic (good) or dark (evil).

ADALWOLF - A species that has the power to shift from their human form into a beautiful creature, twice the size, resembling half man and half wolf. Born with super-strength, they can move from one place to another in supernatural speed. Their eyes take on the appearance of two-shimmering diamonds. With the power to regenerate their own cells, an Adalwolf will stop aging at thirty. The moon has no power over them. And an Adalwolf is immune to silver. They can bond with any species.

LUPA - The ancestors descended from the old legend of the lycanthrope, except the moon has no power over them and it cannot be passed on to others like a virus. It is passed on through genetics to the female offspring, known as a she-wolf. This type of creature shape-shifts into a therianthropic hybrid wolf-like creature, and is considered dangerous... cursed.

THERIOMORPH - This species is born with the genes of a Breedline, but cannot change into a Breedline wolf. They shape shift into an enormous black panther. They possess powers of mind manipulation and random visions of the future. They must use the drug dopamine to suppress their urges. Their eye color shifts into a bright lavender when their Theriomorph nature takes over. The Breedline see them as a threat to their species.

EVE - She is a half-breed and Sebastian's bonded mate. Growing up in human foster care, she spent her entire childhood abused until Sebastian saves her. Scorned from her past, she lashes out in anger, living a life of crime later to discover her twin sister, Mia Blackwood. After realizing the Chiang-Shih demon possesses Sebastian, Eve clings to the past in hopes of reuniting with her beloved. Now that Sebastian is finally free of the demon, she has trust issues, worried he has an alternative plan for their sons.

Sebastian Crow - He is a half-breed, and Eve's bonded mate. After he had been killed by Jace in self- defense, he was possessed by the Chiang-Shih demon after the Angel of Mercy cast him out of Alexander's body. As he tried to portray Sebastian's life, Eve finally figured out his secret. Keeping her captive only to survive on her blood, he later develops feelings for her. The demon creates a death army, determined to dominate the world and unleash his wrath among humans and the Breedline. Now free from the demon, he is determined to reunite with his beloved Eve who is kept prisoner by the Breedline Covenant awaiting trial for her past crimes against them.

Arius and Tidus - Sebastian and Eve's twin boys. Both have inherited their parent's genetics of a half-breed. But Arius carries the mark of the Chiang-Shih demon with the power to create a portal and the ability to heal others.

Dr. Helen Carrington - She is a Breedline species and a physician at the California Bates hospital for both Breedlines and humans. Later, she discovers Jace and Jem carry a gene, possibly used for a cure to stop the aging process in her species. After Alexander's demon is banished, he is pardoned for all past crimes and welcomed into the Breedline Covenant. When he meets Helen, they become bonded mates.
