The Message

by Poetic Friend

Today would've been the day
when I telephoned at sunrise
to wish you Happy Father's Day.

Instead, I beheld
the blushing, boundless sky
to relay my greeting
by thought and spirit,
hoping a winged messenger
would deliver it to you.

Instead, I visited
Hallmark to select a card,
bearing a message etched in gold--
the card that won't be sent.

Instead, I listened
to your voicemail message,
the last one that you voiced
before your transition.

Today is the day
when silent moments sting.

In loving memory of my father and brother.
