A Walk with Poe

by RodG

A Sunday walk has led me through
a cemetery's unhinged gate.
All light's snuffed out save threadbare sun;
black shadows lurk, won't dissipate.

Stark monuments stand soundlessly
amidst tall trees in thick grey fog
while smaller granite headstones squat
near hollow remnants of a log.

I shudder as I listen to
wind screaming through the bare-branched trees,
some shrieking ravens far beyond
the graveyard's high-walled boundaries.

I walk the path with padded steps.
obeisance to these buried dead.
Then suddenly these words erupt:
"Why is my Death what I still dread?"

No answer comes from long-mute mouths,
nor from a swift epiphany.
I leave this place with shaken faith,
more scared of my mortality.

Edgar Allen Poe (1809-1849) loved cemeteries and often walked through those of Baltimore, the city where he died.
Was Poe religious? Did he believe in an afterlife? He was raised in a religious family, but there is no definitive answer given to these questions in any of his works. Some infer from his poetry (e.g. The Raven) that he was.
