Reunited At Last

by scongrove

Previously ...

After Sebastian refused to hand over his son to Lucifer, he becomes trapped in a state of unconsciousness and forced to face the forgotten trauma of his childhood. But before Lucifer unleashes his wraith, he rips into Sebastian’s throat as Eve watches helplessly.

Meanwhile, the guard calls for help and Sebastian is taken from the mental institute and transferred to a nearby hospital where Dr. Helen Carrington cares for his injuries.

Now that Abbey is in good hands—protected by Roman and a team of Special Ops—the next step is reuniting her with her beloved, Steven.

Continued ...

Later that morning, Roman’s team drove Abbey to the Breedline Covenant. Their goal was to avoid engaging the enemy and keep Abbey safely under their radar. They’d spent most of the night setting into motion plans for her protection with Lawrence Colbert. Roman had arranged a meeting with Tim Ross—the Breedline head council—before his team arrived with Abbey. After Roman had explained the dangers involved, the Covenant’s security was tightened and more added, but only Lawrence, Bull, Justice, and Lena would have direct access to Abbey and be in charge of her transportation. In turn, early the following morning, Tim had delivered the news to Tessa—the Breedline Queen—about their situation.

After seven days of paradise in the Caribbean, a location chosen by Jace, he and Tessa had arrived back to the Covenant from their honeymoon the previous evening. They were both shell-shocked to hear the news about Abbey.

When Tessa told her brother Steven, hope suddenly sprung to life within him. His heart thumped like a jackhammer inside his chest, and his pulse raced so fast he felt light-headed. He’d prayed over the years for a miracle more times than he’d care to admit, but his prayers had gone unanswered until now. Steven had harnessed his rage toward everyone involved with Abbey’s disappearance, needing it for the impending confrontation when he’d helped the Breedline battle against Dr. Hubert Crane.

“My god,” Steven said slowly as if it pained him to say it, “is she okay?”

When Tessa looked at Steven with sad, sympathetic eyes, numbness gripped him. Everything moved around him in slow motion. And then a firm hand gripped his shoulder from behind. As Steven flinched and turned around, he met Tim’s gaze.

“Relax, Steven. She’s fine,” Tim said in a calm voice. “Abbey will be here any minute. But she doesn’t know you’re here.”

Steven nodded but looked away, as if trying to hold on to his rapidly deteriorating composure. He wiped a hand over his tired face and shifted his eyes back to Tim.

“Who helped her ... escape?” he asked hesitantly.

“Abbey managed to escape on her own,” Tim said. “But it wasn’t long before hired men were sent to hunt her down. She’s in safe hands as we speak. An old military buddy of Drakon’s got in touch with me. His name is Roman Kincaid. He was hired as a bodyguard for a billionaire named Valkin Steele. After he had found out about Steele’s involvement with Dr. Autenburg’s research, Roman got to Abbey before they did.”

Tim blew out his breath and added, “They’re following Abbey to get to you, Steven.”

Steven stared back and forth at Tim and Tessa, unease gripping him by the throat. “Why?” Steven asked in a low voice.

“It’s a long story,” Tim said, releasing a heavy sigh. “One I need to tell you from the beginning to end, so you understand what we’re dealing with. I know you’re familiar with Dr. Autenburg and Dr. Crane’s research first hand. But now, Valkin Steele is involved.”

Steven frowned. “Who is he, and what’s he got to do with all this?”

“He’s a man with a lot of money, and a lot of power,” Tim said in a grim tone. “Drakon did some digging into Mr. Steele’s background. He found out he’s in charge of a big operation in drugs and arms trafficking. Steele uses an oil company as a cover-up. Everyone who works in the petroleum industry thinks he’s a legit businessman, but he’s dirty. Steele’s got a hand in a lot of different pots.” Tim made a sound of distaste. “God, he even has a lucrative human trafficking operation going. The bastard sells young girls into sexual slavery to the highest bidder.”

Tim broke off, anger surging through his veins having to reveal Steele’s disgusting and evil deeds. “He also had a hand in Abbey’s father’s death.”

The knot in Steven’s throat grew, tightening painfully. “What? I thought all this was over when we put an end to Dr. Crane’s research.”

“Sit,” Tim commanded, gesturing toward a chair. “I’ll explain everything I know.”

As Steven sat down, Tessa pulled out a chair and took a seat beside him.

Tim pulled out a chair where Steven and Tessa sat. When he slumped into it, he placed his cell phone on the table in front of him. “Apparently Dr. Crane had billionaire clients funding his research. They built other research facilities. Valkin Steele is one of their main backers. He’s looking for an Adalwolf that has the power to heal his mistress. She’s dying of cancer.”

Steven shook his head. “But I don’t have that kind of power. Even if I tried, I wouldn’t survive.”

Tim was silent for a long moment before he said, “Are you sure?”

Steven paled, suddenly feeling sick to his stomach. The weight of his mother’s death settled like a ton of bricks on his shoulders and his heart. It would kill him if he possessed the power to heal a fatal wound, knowing his mother had died. “I thought ...” He took a deep breath, his features drawn into a mask of pain and confusion. “Dr. Autenburg told me I couldn’t heal a fatal wound or illness. He said I would die if I ever tried.”

“Jesus,” Tessa breathed. “Even if you have that kind of power, it’s not worth risking your life to find out.”

“I agree,” Tim said instantly. “But Valkin Steele would take that risk. He already proved that theory with Abbey’s father. His life meant nothing to the man. Steele is the kind of monster that would sell out his own children to save his skin.”

“What the hell are we going to do?” Steven blurted. “We’ve got to take down the son of a bitch.”

“It’s the reason why I called a meeting with the council this morning. Roman Kincaid knows people who can help us. It’s what they do. They work for a Special Ops group. Some of what they do is private, but our military also contracts them for missions that no one else can do or will. And they’re damn good. What we have now isn’t enough,” Tim added. “Steele has resources beyond the Breedline’s imaginings.“

Tim’s cell phone rang, interrupting the tense conversation. He glanced down to see that it was the number of the Napa State Mental Hospital calling.

“Christ,” Tim muttered under his breath. “This is Tim Ross,” he answered.

“How did Sebastian get attacked?” Tim roared into the phone. “Wasn’t a guard on duty? Has anyone viewed the video footage?”

Tessa and Steven immediately came to attention when they heard Tim mention Sebastian’s name.

Helpless rage gripped Tim by the throat as he listened to the guard from the Institute where they kept Sebastian prisoner. While the guard explained to him what had transpired, Tim’s blood boiled in his veins. The timing couldn’t possibly get any worse, he thought.

“I will deal with this later. I have more important issues at the moment,” Tim said, breathing out heavily over the phone. “I want two guards with him at all times. Do I make myself clear?”

He ended the call and set the phone down with shaky hands, his eyes nearly black with rage.

Tessa’s eyes widened. “What’s going on?”

“A guard at the Napa State Mental Hospital said someone attacked Sebastian,” Tim declared. “He’s at the Bates Hospital right now. Helen was the physician on staff when they brought him in.”

“Did they say who attacked him?” Tessa queried.

“The guard stated no one was in the room with him when it happened.”

“But how can that be?” Tessa said, her voice sounding baffled. “Have they checked the surveillance cameras?”

Tim shook his head. “No. Not yet.”

“Please tell me the bastard is dead,” Steven chimed in.

Tim lifted an eyebrow and Tessa could see the tension building on his face. She was having the same thoughts as Steven. The world would be a safer place if Sebastian were dead.

“Sorry, Steven,” Tim said, scrubbing his hand over his short trimmed hair. “He’s still alive, but the guard said he’s in a coma.”

“What are you going to do?” Steven asked Tim.

“Right now we’ve got bigger problems on our hands. We’ll have to deal with this later. We’re meeting—”

Whatever Tim was about to say was cut off when a sharp knock sounded at the door. Everyone looked toward the door in silence.

Tim refocused his eyes back to Steven. “Just sit here and try to relax,” he said moving to his feet. “We’re all in this together, Steven.”

Relief shone brightly in Steven’s eyes as he leaned back in his chair.

When Tim opened the door, he gestured for Drakon to come in. As he stepped inside the library, Drakon exchanged quick glances with Tessa and Steven and nodded. “Roman’s team is waiting downstairs.”

Steven shot out of his chair. “Where’s Abbey?” he demanded. “Is she here?”

Drakon held up his hand and said, “Calm down, Steven. She’s all right. They have Abbey with them.”

Before Roman’s team escorted Abbey upstairs to the library, her voice echoed from downstairs.

“Steven? Oh, my god ... is that you?”

“Abbey!” Steven bellowed.

And then to Roman’s utter shock, Abbey pushed by him and his team and rushed upstairs. As Lawrence took off after her, Roman stopped him and said, “She’s fine. Let her go.”

The looks on Roman’s team members’ faces were a mixture of what-the-hell and utter bewilderment that Roman let Abbey out of his sight.

When Abbey got to the top of the stairs, she inserted herself between Tim and Drakon and threw her arms around Steven, hugging him tightly. Steven caught his breath, relieved as he held Abbey tightly against his body.

“Thank God,” Steven said, an edge of pain lacing his voice. He was so overcome with guilt for not being the one to find Abbey he could barely maintain his composure. But he had to stay strong for her. “I’ve got you now. You’re safe, Abbey.”

As Abbey pulled away, Steven looked her up and down, his eyes narrowing as if studying her for injuries. “Are you okay?” he asked in a soft voice.

“I’m fine, Steven,” she said. “If it weren’t for Roman Kincaid and his team,” she paused and shook her head, “I wouldn’t have found you.”

Steven slid an arm around Abbey’s shoulders, pulling her into his side, and brushed a kiss over her brow. He lost the battle, and broken sobs welled in his throat. “God, I thought I’d never see you again. I’ll never let you go again,” he vowed. “I love you, Abbey.”

Abbey closed her eyes, fighting the urge to break down and fall apart. When she reopened them, relief swamped her bright, blue eyes before going glossy with tears. “I love you, too.”

“Abbey,” Steven said, shifting his eyes in Tessa’s direction. “I’d like to introduce you to my sister, Tessa.”

Abbey looked at Steven puzzled. “Sister?”

Steven nodded. “I found my family, Abbey. I even found my father.”

She smiled. “I’m so happy for you, Steven.”

Tessa stepped forward and extended her hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Abbey.”

Abbey took her hand and said, “It’s nice to meet you too, Tessa.”

The sound of heavy footsteps made Tessa, Steven, and Abbey look toward the door. Lawrence, Justice, Lena, and Bull stepped into the room. Roman strode in last, a determined set to his jaw.

As soon as they caught sight of Tessa, all four of them bowed their head in respect of the Breedline queen.

“Thank you all for coming,” Tessa spoke out. “We appreciate your alliance with the Covenant. I would like to introduce my brother, Steven.”

Steven nodded in their direction. And then his brows drew together, staring intently in Lena’s direction. She was an interesting character. She had a stocky build, and her hair was pulled back into a thick, long braid. Her expression was intense. Standing next to the Xena Warrior Princess doppelganger, were three towering men. They all appeared as if they had the skills of assassins. He shifted his focus toward the man that stepped out from behind the others. Steven’s gaze swept up and down, taking in every detail of Roman’s appearance. As he moved closer, he extended his hand. When Steven spoke, it was in a quiet, but firm voice. “Thank you for everything you’ve done for Abbey.”

Roman eyed Steven, his demeanor calm, but his eyes betrayed him. There was a harsh gleam as if they screamed revenge. Something Steven could relate to. Roman was determined to take down the bastards who’d tortured Abbey and all the other innocent people over the years. As he surged forward, he took Steven’s hand into a firm handshake. “I’m sorry it took me this long. I had no idea the man I worked for was underhanded,” he admitted, his deep voice slightly accented. “I just hope you believe me when I say I’ll do whatever it takes to put an end to Valkin Steele and everyone involved.”

Steven nodded, adrenaline stirring in his veins. “I have faith in the Covenant’s judgment,” he said, releasing Roman’s hand. “And you can count me in, too.”

“I’d like to introduce my team,” Roman said. “This is Lena. She’s highly trained in survival skills, martial arts and anything dealing with weapons and hand-to-hand combat. That’s Justice standing beside her. Not only is he a pilot, but he’s also an expert with explosives, hand-to-hand combat, and sniper training. Next to Justice is Bull. He’s ...” Roman paused, staring in Bull’s direction, trying to find the right words to describe the man the size of a mountain. “Let’s just say he’s an expert in everything.”

Bull smirked, his mouth curving into a half smile.

“And this is Lawrence,” Roman continued, turning toward the man standing to his right, his stature as big as Bull’s. Lawrence’s complexion stood out among the others, dark as night and his eyes sparkled like two bright, green gemstones. “He’s an expert in unconventional warfare, and he’s also a medic.”

Lawrence nodded and smiled, his white teeth flashing against his dark skin.

Roman turned around, shifting his focus to the open doorway when he heard the sound of someone clearing their throat. His surprise gaze met two tall, identical twins. Their long, blonde hair reminded him of American musicians from an eighties rock band. But Roman knew who they were. From Tim’s description during their discussion last night, they had to be the Chamberlain twins. Both carried powerful genetics, descended from an ancient demon, known as the Chiang-shih. One was called the Beast, and the other was the Chosen Son. He curled and uncurled his fingers as thoughts played over and over in his head. Were they a danger to the mission? And could they be trusted?

Jace and Jem stared back at Roman, their expressions unreadable. Roman fought to keep his body language neutral. His lips twitched, and he glanced sideways at Drakon, waiting for his response. When Drakon nodded at him with an approval stamped all over his face, Roman’s shoulders sank in relief. He trusted Drakon with his life. A memory of the past slammed into Roman with painful intensity. He rubbed his chest to alleviate the aching discomfort. He swore he’d never involve Drakon in another mission again, especially after what he’d done for Roman ten years ago. On an assignment in Afghanistan, Drakon had taken a bullet, using his body as a shield to protect Roman in the line of fire. That kind of loyalty was hard to find. Not many men, no matter what, were willing to sacrifice their lives for someone else. Ordinary civilians couldn’t possibly understand that kind of selflessness.

Tim’s voice alerted Roman’s attention, bringing him back to reality.

“If everyone would please take a seat,” Tim said, pointing toward a table large enough for thirty chairs. “We’re waiting for more council members to arrive, and another group Drakon invited that can add to our list of allies.”

NOTE: This is not part of the chapter. A reference for terms and cast of characters, especially for new readers:

BREEDLINE - A species of humans that have the ability to change from human form into a wolf. They are not like the old legend of the Lycanthropy myth. Breedline species can shift into their wolf at will. The moon has no power over them. They do not pass their ability to other humans with a bite or scratch like the Lycanthropy myth.
The Breedline gene is passed down to offspring that are born identical twins. Although they live among humans, their species must be kept secret.
In wolf form, they have super strength, speed, and heightened senses. Compared to humans, Breedlines have tremendous advantages when it comes to health. Their bodies heal fast and are not subject to illnesses or diseases. The only thing that slows their healing process is silver. It is their kryptonite. Besides old age, a silver bullet to the brain is the only thing deadly to the species.
All males change into their wolf at the age of eighteen. Females do not go through the change until they make love to their Breedline bonded mate.

BREEDLINE TWINS - Identical twins that are born from either one or both parents of the Breedline species. They have a strong, unbreakable bond from birth, are born with telepathic abilities, and have the power to sense the other's emotions or injuries. In some cases, the bond between twins is so strong, that if one dies, the other twin may pass on, especially if they don't have a mate.

BREEDLINE BONDING - The male Breedline spends their life in search of their bonded mate. When the male comes in contact with her, he instantly feels a simultaneous, desirable attraction and she becomes the most important thing in his life. He is there to love, protect, and cherish her until death. Once they are mated, they bond for life. It is possible for them to have more than one mate in their lifespan.

BELOVED - A word used by a Breedline to express the bond to their mate.

DOUBLE BONDED - In some cases, male Breedline twins bond with the same female but one will carry a stronger bond. Usually one of them must sacrifice for the other twin.

BREEDLINE COVENANT - The Breedline species must live within the boundaries of a Covenant, which is only formed with their species. The Covenant is governed and ruled by a head council. The council keeps their laws in order and oversees the species population.

THE BREEDLINE QUEEN - Over centuries the Breedline Covenant is ruled by a true queen. If there is no queen living, the Covenants are governed by an appointed head council until another one is born. A Breedline queen is born once every one hundred years. Her massive stature, black fur, and red eyes are the queen's trademarks. Her alpha wolf has twice the strength, speed, and size of any Breedline. The queen is expected to rule over all the Breedline Covenants where she will be respected and obeyed by all Breedline. This is their absolute True Law.

THE QUEENS RING - This ring has been passed down to all Breedline queens for generations. When the new queen places the ring on, it instantly shifts in size to fit her finger.

TRUE LAW - All Breedline Covenants have an ancient book of laws. If either sex disobeys the Breedline laws, they can be shunned, or no longer protected by their Covenant. If a Breedline takes another life out of revenge, or evil - other than protecting their life, and the life of another - they will never have the ability to shift back human and cast out as a rogue wolf.

ROGUE WOLF - A Breedline shunned by their Covenant for taking another life out of revenge or evil and forced to live as a wolf until death without the ability to change human again. Some rogue wolves form into packs, which can be dangerous for other Breedline species.

RED (BLOOD) MOON - When the full moon passes through the amber shadow of the earth, producing a midnight eclipse visible across North America. So begins a lunar eclipse tetrad, a series of four consecutive total eclipses occurring at approximately six-month intervals. This incredible light beams into the heart of earth's shadow, filling it with a coppery glow and transforming the moon into a great red orb. During this time, all Breedline species that are mated have a strong desire to create an offspring. This is also a time when Breedline females are more fertile for the conception of twins.

SUCCUBUS (a.k.a. CREEPERS) - Creatures that search for, and feeds off the blood of the Breedline species. Creepers are skilled at extreme sexual pleasure, and the ecstasy they create is exceedingly intense and highly addictive. They cast off a scent that hypnotizes Breedlines into overwhelming sexual urges. They use their human-like bodies and beautiful features to control and influence their thoughts.
They have the ability to reach into the Breedline's mind during sleep, casting a spell of dreams about sexual contact, or intercourse. And one much less obvious manifestation of Creepers is nightmares - realistic, graphic, terrifying nightmares that rob the Breedline of sleep. Over a period, it can lead to severe fatigue and depression, leaving them emotionally and spiritually drained. Death can occur if they ultimately take over the Breedline's body.

HALF-BREED - This species is born with the genes from both Breedline and succubus. They can bond with either a full-blood Breedline or another half-breed. They cannot change into the Breedline wolf, but they do need blood from them to survive. With the power to hypnotize, most Breedlines have minimal respect and credence toward the half-breed species.

WICCA (or Wise One) - According to the Breedline species, a Wicca is the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts, and necromancy. A Wicca is also considered to be a demonic spirit. It is unclear to the Breedline if they act under the orders of the devil, or they are simply not understood and treated as outcasts. They can do white magic (good) or dark (evil).

ADALWOLF - A species that has the power to shift from their human form into a beautiful creature, three times the size, resembling half man and half wolf. Born with super-strength, they can move from one place to another in supernatural speed. Their eyes take on the appearance of two-shimmering diamonds. With the power to regenerate their own cells, an Adalwolf will stop aging at thirty. The moon has no power over them. And an Adalwolf is immune to silver. They can bond with any species.

LUPA - The ancestors descended from the old legend of the lycanthrope, except the moon has no power over them and it cannot be passed on to others like a virus. It is passed on through genetics to the female offspring, known as a she-wolf. This type of creature shape-shifts into a therianthropic hybrid wolf-like creature, and is considered dangerous... cursed.

EVE - She is a half-breed and Sebastian's bonded mate. Growing up in human foster care, she spent her entire childhood abused until Sebastian saves her. Scorned from her past, she lashes out in anger, living a life of crime later to discover her twin sister, Mia Blackwood. After realizing the Chiang-Shih demon possesses Sebastian, Eve clings to the past in hopes of reuniting with her beloved. Now that Sebastian is finally free of the demon, she has trust issues, worried he has an alternative plan for their sons.

Sebastian Crow - He is a half-breed, and Eve's bonded mate. After he had been killed by Jace in self- defense, he was possessed by the Chiang-Shih demon after the Angel of Mercy cast him out of Alexander's body. As he tried to portray Sebastian's life, Eve finally figured out his secret. Keeping her captive only to survive on her blood, he later develops feelings for her. The demon creates a death army, determined to dominate the world and unleash his wrath among humans and the Breedline. Now free from the demon, he is determined to reunite with his beloved Eve who is kept prisoner by the Breedline Covenant awaiting trial for her past crimes against them.

Arius and Tidus - Sebastian and Eve's twin boys. Both have inherited their parent's genetics of a half-breed. But Arius carries the mark of the Chiang-Shih demon with the power to create a portal and the ability to heal others.

Steven Pasquale (a.k.a. Steven Craven) - He inherited the genes of a Breedline and an Adalwolf. He was taken from his mother and forced to endure a life of endless, painful experiments by two German physicians; Dr. Hans Autenburg and Dr. Hubert Crane. Without the knowledge of his real family, Steven finally manages to escape his captors, locating his biological parents and his fraternal twin, Tessa Fairchild.

Abbey (a.k.a. Abigail Winthrop) - She inherited the genetics of a Lupa from her mother, who died giving birth. Captured by Dr. Hans Autenburg - a German physician - she spent most of her life forced to endure experiments until she finally managed to escape. With no place to go, Abbey is determined to finally reunite with her beloved Steven after they were separated years ago.

Tim Ross - He is a Breedline species and head council of the California Covenant. Angel, his bonded mate - who is a half-breed - has Tim's daughter they named Natalie, after her sister.

Dr. Helen Carrington - She is a Breedline species and a physician at the California Bates hospital for both Breedlines and humans. Later, she discovers Jace and Jem carry a gene, possibly used for a cure to stop the aging process in her species. After Alexander's demon is banished, he is pardoned for all past crimes and welcomed into the Breedline Covenant. When he meets Helen, they become bonded mates.

Drakon Hexus - He is a Breedline species. At a young age, his first bonded mate was killed by her father. In a rage, he hunts and kills her murderer, breaking the Breedline's True Law. Shunned by his Covenant and forced to live as a rogue wolf, he's promised his humanity back if he joins the Chiang-Shih demon's army. After Drakon discovers the demon's plans to destroy all humans and half-breeds, he betrays him and joins forces with the Breedline. As time passes, he bonds with another mate, Cassie Chamberlain.

Jace Chamberlain (a.k.a. the Beast) - He is a Breedline species which later discovers his birth father - who is possessed by the Chiang-Shih demon -murdered his mother when he and his twin brother were four years old. Raised by their new foster family and their Uncle Jacks, he later discovers he was born with a curse of the Beast. With the help of his twin brother Jem, and his bonded mate Tessa, they help him cope with his rage to keep the Beast at bay. He's an IT engineer and is the lead singer and plays acoustic guitar in the band Chaos.

Jem Chamberlain (a.k.a. the Chosen Son) - He is a Breedline species and Jace's twin brother. He carries the gene of the Chiang-Shih demon that gives him the power to create a portal, and a force of electric energy used as a weapon and other powers he discovers later. His bonded mate is Mia Blackwood, and he's an IT engineer and the drummer in the band Chaos.

Tessa Fairchild - She was born into the human world and later discovers she's a Breedline. Abandoned by her parents, she was raised by her aunt and uncle without the knowledge of being born a twin. After she meets Jace, they become bonded mates. During her first change into her Breedline wolf, she is the new Breedline queen. She is an inspiring artist.
