A scene from yesterday after some much needed rain

Frogs on Logs

by bob cullen

There are frogs on logs adrift in a creek
Floating downstream it's been raining all week
Roads filled with puddles, boy's splashing about
Covered in mud from their toes to their snout

Mum screams when she sees the state of his clothes
Just stand there a sec. No, find me the hose
He does as he's told she turns on the spray
Mum's laughing out loud seems she wants to play

He runs round and round avoiding the spray
Laughing and shouting it's his special day
Today he turns five his party can wait
He's chasing his Mum she is his best mate

She's raised him alone no help from his dad
When Mum's not around there's always grandad
He snores loud at night but he knows football
And he comes running whenever I call

He's old and wrinkled but always nearby
Says life can be hard but you have to try
"Failure ain't nothing," that's his battle cry
"And learning's easy, just keep asking why."

There are frogs on logs all croaking out loud
Today's their day they're playing to the crowd
Let's enjoy the rain and their friendly sound
Tomorrow they'll be back under the ground

My first entry for 2018. I've been working on submitting a novel to agents. I've had one request for a full read so I'm living on hope.
