The Checkbook

by pome lover

Is she trying to land us in debtor’s prison?
My owner writes checks without rhyme or risson.  And bills?
Here’s the score: I pay them; she spends, and she spends and spends… more.
She makes some deposits, but there’s always a shortfall.
My checks blush with shame, but then, after all,
It is not my fault!  It must be the bank’s.  I uphold my end.  But do I get thanks?
She writes in amounts—I’m just there to absorb. That’s all there is to it.  Simple.  Straight forward.
My checks are all honest, the finest of fine… so why does that blankety banker malign my good name, my honor, my in-teg-rity?
I’m just a small checkbook, can’t he see?.
But hark, now I have to alert all my friends—my fellow checkbooks—for this may be the end:
I heard something today—if it’s true, hard to tell, but if so, I can tell you it is our death knell!
My owner’s teen daughter, stretched out on the floor, said, “Mo-om, nobody writes checks anymore.”
Well, why not?  I wondered.
“Why not?” asked my owner. (I love it when we are in sync, by thunder!)
Teen said, “Because everyone pays bills online and credit cards for other stuff all the time.”
Death knell.  Our death knell.  I was overwrought.
Then all of a sudden, I had a thought: I bet they pay credit card bills with their checks.
Eureka! No longer a poor nervous wreck.
I sent that good thought to my owner, and then, she said it out loud.
Yay! (We’re in sync again!)
“Guess so,” said the daughter (from deep in a funk)
So, credit cards saved us.
Who’da thunk?
