Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
We should have seen this coming

In Retrospect

by Janet Foor

We once were lost in ecstasy
and thought we were all knowing.
We made sweet vows sealed with a kiss –
our innocence was showing.

In retrospect I do believe
we should have seen this coming.
The picture-perfect couple who
were starry eyed and cooing.

Then years and circumstances changed
as life became distressing.
We moved into our separate worlds
and time was unrelenting.

Without a common ground to hone --
while neither one was looking,
we let go of the love we’d known --
ambivalence kept growing.

One morning when we met to halt
this life that was unbending,
there was a tiny glimpse of us --
and all that we were ending.

Still on that day, we went away
our house of cards imploding.
Two hearts unyielding to the end --
plain apathy was showing.

I'm taking a 12-week-class where we are to write our memoirs in 12 segments representing 12 chronological parts of our lives.
Recalling this specific time has been particularly difficult.
Sometime a marriage ends - not with angry shouts, but with a weary whimper.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
