Left with no other choice, the Breedline go up against Dr. Crane’s hybrids in battle in order to defend their Covenant. During the battle, the Breedline are hit with grenades, knocking everyone unconscious except for Steven, Jem, and Casey. While Sebastian and Thomas escape through the portal, taking Jace with them, the rest of the Breedline regains consciousness and takes Samuel Mercier—a Breedline traitor who is helping Thomas—into custody.
Using his powers, Arius took Eve and his twin brother Tidus to the room Sebastian had Mia sedated. After Arius surrounded Mia with his healing powers, he took them to the safety of the Breedline Covenant.
When Sebastian found Eve’s note she’d left behind telling him good-bye, he was desperate to get her back. But that had to be put on the back burner. Now that the Breedline had their location, Sebastian and his twin brother had no choice but to go with Dr. Crane’s men when they came for Jace and hide out at the research facility where they had taken Tessa and her mother Lilith.

“I don’t like it,” Jem said grimly as he watched from a distance near the estate, hiding amongst a vast of trees. As Sebastian climbed inside the back of a black sedan, his twin brother came into view, exiting the large front entry doors. When Thomas got in, they drove away. Jem turned to his comrades, seeking their assessment. They didn’t look any happier than he was.
This had been way too easy, Jem thought. And Sebastian had that smug, egotistic smile as if he knew they were watching, laughing at them all. Was he that arrogant or was this a setup?
“The entire situation sucks balls,” Kyle said with a scowl. “Why are we sitting on our asses, watching them drive away?”
A glimmer of a smile curved Drakon’s lips. “I can track them,” he said, holding up a small device, waving it in Kyle’s face. “It’ll take us right to their location.”
Kyle grinned. “I like the way you think Drakon when you don’t have your head stuck in a computer.”
Drakon shot him a look and snorted. “I’m so kicking your ass when this is over.”
Even though Kyle was a smart-ass, Drakon was proud of the long way he had come. After dealing with Celina’s abduction and her critical injuries, he’d managed to overcome all those obstacles with the maturity of a grown man instead of the cocky kid he used to be.
“Let’s get moving,” Tim said in his command voice.

At last, an SUV pulled into view, parking only a few meters away from the vehicle Thomas and Sebastian were in. A tall, bearded, burly man emerged from the SUV driver’s seat, an automatic pistol in hand and cautiously inspected the area for any signs of intruders. Looking out of the sedan’s tinted window, Thomas watched as the man lifted his hand to signal the other driver and spotted a leather whip coiled underneath his jacket.
As the garage door opened, both vehicles drove inside. Quickly determining that no deadly surprises were in store, the bearded man opened the back door of the sedan and motioned for Thomas and Sebastian to step out.
Sebastian wore a stylishly tailored Armani suit with expensive rings glittered on his fingers, and a gold chain hung from his neck. “So?” Sebastian asked petulantly, his eyes glaring at the bearded man. “Where the hell is this Dr. Crane? When are we supposed to meet with him?”
As ever, Sebastian’s arrogant bluster and demanding tone came out instantly. The man ignored him, knowing who truly held power here, even if Sebastian liked to pretend otherwise. He fixed an intimidating gaze on Sebastian. “Dr. Crane is busy at the moment,” he said in a deep baritone. “Your driver will show you to your quarters.”
And then he turned and walked away, leaving them in silence.

Dr. Hurbert Crane’s laboratory was hidden away in a heavily secured, private facility by a British intelligence service. It provided a broad range of cutting-edge scientific equipment for Dr. Crane and his highly trained physicians.
His guards shoved Jace to his knees—heavily drugged and chained to a pair of iron rings embedded in the floor. Overwhelmed and weak from the tranquilizers, he was easily subdued by his captors.
Need to focus, Jace thought. I’ve got to save Tessa.
Barely able to lift his head, Jace could not fight back as they shackled his wrists, binding his arms uncomfortably above his head. After the men quickly secured his bonds, they stepped away.
Jace slowly lifted his chin when the sound of a door sprung open and closed. Several people came into view as Jace blinked, trying to see through blurred vision. Dressed in white lab coats, they spread out, forming a border around him so that they surrounded him from the front and the back. A pale, thin man oddly resembling Adolf Hitler stepped forward and faced Jace but did not address him. Instead, he nodded at a stocky guard.
As the guard uncoiled a fearsome whip composed of leather and silver, he cracked the lash against Jace’s shoulders.
Jace gasped in agony as the whip tore through his bare skin, burning his flesh, blood streaming down his back.
The Hitler doppelganger raised his hand, signaling the guard to halt. As Dr. Crane stepped closer to Jace, his eyes narrowed, and his jaw clenched tight. “Pring forth your beast,” he demanded in a thick German accent.
“Go to hell,” Jace gasped.
Dr. Crane pursed his lips and stepped back. Shifting his glare toward the guard, he gave a slight nod.
Jace knew what was coming next as he braced himself for another blow. But not even his stubborn resistance could remove the searing agony as the whip viciously lashed his back, again and again, shredding flesh and muscle, until he collapsed forward, limp against the restraints.
Dr. Crane lifted his hand, at last, signaling an end to Jace’s torture. The guard lowered the whip and stepped away from Jace. Thick blood dripped from the long leather strap onto the cold cement floor.
Taking care not to step in the pooling blood, the men in white coats filed out of the room one by one. Dr. Crane was the last to leave. Now that his brutal effort to bring forth Jace’s Beast had failed, he would be forced to use another method to persuade him to turn. At the last moment, the doctor hesitated at the doorway and glanced over his shoulder. His evil glare met Jace, and his thin lips parted as though to speak a final warning. “Your precious mate vill pay the price for your defiance.”
“No!” Jace screamed hoarsely, “Tessa!”
Without another word, Dr. Crane stepped out of the room with only the sound of the heavy metal door slamming shut.
Panic flooded his face as he grasped at what fate was going to be brought upon his beloved Tessa. I’ll kill you! Jace thought, a growl forming at the back of his throat. And then unbridled fury reawakened inside him, pushing away the effects of the drugs.
Every inch of his body quivered in feral anger. Straining muscles rippled beneath his skin, while the veins in his neck thickened. The beat of his heart pounded in his chest, and his eyes flashed white. His face contorted into a hellish mask of pain as his bones shifted within him, growing larger and more imposing. A beam of light engulfed his body as his splayed fingers degenerated into claws. When the brilliant glow dissipated, bristling white fur erupted from beneath his hide, covering the ugly welt marks on his back. Wolf-like ears twitched atop his skull, and a canine snout stretched out his face, suddenly alive to immeasurable new smells.
The guard’s eyes widened in apprehension as he belatedly realized what was happening. Rushing toward the door in a panic-fueled fear, he hit the alarm.
Without any effort, the iron shackles restraining the Beast snapped like twigs. With supernatural speed, the Beast charged at the guard from across the room. Broken chains dangled from the Beast’s wrists as he sent them slicing through the air, giving the guard a taste of his own medicine. They shattered his ribs as they smacked forcefully against the enemy’s midsection. An almost-human smile formed over the Beast’s snout as he watched the guard drop to the floor in agony. He threw his head back and howled with triumph that echoed across the facility and beyond.

Tracking the location, Jem brought the others to the outside of the private facility’s grounds using a portal. As they heard the roar of Jace’s Beast and the sound of an alarm, they all came to attention, every single one of them tense and ready to explode into action.
“Shit!” Kyle swore. “It sounds like Jace is pissed.”
“You have such a knack for stating the obvious,” Drakon replied mockingly.
“It’s going to get interesting now. Keep your eyes peeled,” Tim said, his gaze shifting to all the others. “We’re going to blast our way inside and take down anyone that gets in our way. Once we get in, we’re going to split up into teams,” he directed, focusing on Jem. “I want you and Steven to go in first. Do whatever you got to do.”
Fortunately, Tim had faith in Jem and Steven’s determination and abilities. Steven’s intent on avenging the constant torture he’d endured from the past would not rest until he liquidated the ones responsible. And then he would be relieved to be finally free from hiding in the shadows from his cruel captors after all these years.
“Drakon and I will follow in behind,” Tim stated, moving his eyes off Jem and turning toward Kyle and Casey. “I want you two to find Tessa,” he ordered, handing Kyle a radio. “Once you find her location, contact me. I’ve got your radio linked to mine.”
“What about my mother?” Steven spoke out. “We can’t just leave her behind.”
In theory, of course, Steven and Tessa’s mother had already “died” years ago. Dr. Crane and his colleague, Dr. Autenburg, had stopped her beating heart and transformed her into something dangerous that went against the laws of nature. She may be an abomination of God’s creatures, but still, she was their mother, and the Breedline never left family behind.
“Of course,” Tim quickly agreed. “She won’t be left behind. We’ll get her to safety as well.”
Steven nodded and seemed to relax a bit. “Thank you, Tim.”
“All right, everyone ready?” Tim barked.
When everyone nodded, with determination on their faces, Tim said, “Be ready.”

Taking care not to step in the pooling blood, the men in white coats filed out of the room one by one. Dr. Crane was the last to leave. Now that his brutal effort to bring forth Jace’s Beast had failed, he would be forced to use another method to persuade him to turn. At the last moment, the doctor hesitated at the doorway and glanced over his shoulder. His evil glare met Jace, and his thin lips parted as though to speak a final warning. “Your precious mate vill pay the price for your defiance.”
“No!” Jace screamed hoarsely, “Tessa!”
Without another word, Dr. Crane stepped out of the room with only the sound of the heavy metal door slamming shut.

The guard’s eyes widened in apprehension as he belatedly realized what was happening. Rushing toward the door in a panic-fueled fear, he hit the alarm.
Without any effort, the iron shackles restraining the Beast snapped like twigs. With supernatural speed, the Beast charged at the guard from across the room. Broken chains dangled from the Beast’s wrists as he sent them slicing through the air, giving the guard a taste of his own medicine. They shattered his ribs as they smacked forcefully against the enemy’s midsection. An almost-human smile formed over the Beast’s snout as he watched the guard drop to the floor in agony. He threw his head back and howled with triumph that echoed across the facility and beyond.

Tracking the location, Jem brought the others to the outside of the private facility’s grounds using a portal. As they heard the roar of Jace’s Beast and the sound of an alarm, they all came to attention, every single one of them tense and ready to explode into action.
“Shit!” Kyle swore. “It sounds like Jace is pissed.”
“You have such a knack for stating the obvious,” Drakon replied mockingly.
“It’s going to get interesting now. Keep your eyes peeled,” Tim said, his gaze shifting to all the others. “We’re going to blast our way inside and take down anyone that gets in our way. Once we get in, we’re going to split up into teams,” he directed, focusing on Jem. “I want you and Steven to go in first. Do whatever you got to do.”
Fortunately, Tim had faith in Jem and Steven’s determination and abilities. Steven’s intent on avenging the constant torture he’d endured from the past would not rest until he liquidated the ones responsible. And then he would be relieved to be finally free from hiding in the shadows from his cruel captors after all these years.
“Drakon and I will follow in behind,” Tim stated, moving his eyes off Jem and turning toward Kyle and Casey. “I want you two to find Tessa,” he ordered, handing Kyle a radio. “Once you find her location, contact me. I’ve got your radio linked to mine.”
“What about my mother?” Steven spoke out. “We can’t just leave her behind.”
In theory, of course, Steven and Tessa’s mother had already “died” years ago. Dr. Crane and his colleague, Dr. Autenburg, had stopped her beating heart and transformed her into something dangerous that went against the laws of nature. She may be an abomination of God’s creatures, but still, she was their mother, and the Breedline never left family behind.
“Of course,” Tim quickly agreed. “She won’t be left behind. We’ll get her to safety as well.”
Steven nodded and seemed to relax a bit. “Thank you, Tim.”
“All right, everyone ready?” Tim barked.

Dr. Helen Carrington - She is a Breedline species and a physician at the California Bates hospital for both Breedlines and humans. Later, she discovers Jace and Jem carry a gene, possibly used for a cure to stop the aging process in her species. After Alexander's demon is banished, he is pardoned for all past crimes and welcomed into the Breedline Covenant. When he meets Helen, they become bonded mates.
Drakon Hexus - He is a Breedline species. At a young age, his first bonded mate was killed by her father. In a rage, he hunts and kills her murderer, breaking the Breedline's True Law. Shunned by his Covenant and forced to live as a rogue wolf, he's promised his humanity back if he joins the Chiang-shih demon's army. Corbin Azzo - He is a Breedline and a council member that has turned against the Covenant to help the Chiang-shih demon.
Steven Pasquale (a.k.a Steven Craven) - He inherited the genes of a Breedline and an Adalwolf. He was taken from his mother and forced to endure a life of endless, painful experiments by a German physician's, Dr. Hans Autenburg and Dr. Hubert Crane. Without the knowledge of his real family, Steven finally manages to escape his captors, locating his biological parents and fraternal twin, Tessa Fairchild.
